Sailor Steve 05-06-11 08:18 PM

Just saw the first showing at our local Megaplex this morning.

Great movie? Of course not.

Good movie? Maybe. Depends on what you like.

Good summer popcorn flick? Oh yeah.

Good genre movie? I'd say if you liked the Iron Man movies you'll like Thor. Well written, good action, good acting, good direction from Kenneth Branagh. I was unfamiliar with Chris Hemsworth, who does a very good job in the title role, starting off as the arrogant jerk who actually deserves his banishment, but learns from the people around him and grows into a hero. Anthony Hopkins is Odin, Rene Russo is Frigga, Thor's mother, Natalie Portman is the love interest/spunky and smart scientest, and Stellan Skarsgård is good as her mentor. Also unfamiliar to me was Tom Hiddleston, who is nicely both sinister and sympathetic as Loki, who, as with any good villain, is really trying to do what he feels is best for all involved.

Special effects are spectacular, but don't distract too much from the story or overpower it, which is as it should be.

All-in-all I didn't think my money was wasted. Had a good time.

And that's really the most important question. If you felt that your money was well spent for the entertainment than it was a good movie. :yeah:

Me? I am just too frickin cheap to go to the theaters. :D

Same here, though in my case it's probably more lazy than cheap. But in certain cases I make exceptions. :sunny:

I'm not talking about the animated version.

I just bought that DVD a month or two ago and I have to agree. Filming in Iceland, using real Nordic people in the cast, a decent plot, it all combined to make a much better movie than that animated piece of mass market crap.

Saw it the other day, and as Steve said, a good popcorn flick nothing more. Icing on the cake, saw it in 3D.

So ... say one enjoyed the first Iron Man but thought the second one to be a little boring and self-indulgent. Would Thor be a decent choice for that person (a non-comic book kinda guy)?

Hard to say, as i liked both. As I guessed before seeing it, it's based deeply in the comic, using Norse mythology as nothing but a springboard. Taken on its own merits, it's fun, not overly deep, ties in with the rest of them, and don't forget to stay until the end of the credits, as like the Iron Man movies it has one last scene at the very very end.

What was Sir A Hopkins like as Odin?

Turns out he makes a pretty cool Odin as well. :yep:

Just got in from seeing "Thor" - liked it overall, wouldn't mind seeing it again. An opinion based purely on the movie's artistic merits.

The image of Chris Hemsworth as Thor walking around shirtless in those low-jeans, which is now permanently burned into my brain, has absolutely nothing to do with it. :shifty:

He succumbed far too easily to the sedative injection for my liking :DL

Have you seen this series by any chance?

uring the series there are one or two references to him having been awarded the George Cross but he (his character in the series) will play it down as not being very imprtant.

Unfortunately no I haven't. That picture is from the movie "A Bridge Too Far". One of the best Paratrooper movies ever released.

Great series, I like British detectives:up:

It's an entirely different Frost BTW, IIRC they did tell what his George Cross was awarded for, and it's nothing military.
And besides, the colonel is named John, while the detective is named Jack. Also, John frost would have been somewhere in his late 70s/80s in the time period the detective series was aired.
Still, an awesome detective series:up:
