I was playing at 1k/2k until I recenty read a thread on here talking about how 128 should be the max , otherwise you will miss out on contacts/aircraft etc

the moment I started at 128 , approaching the english channel from the east , I see a formation of He-111's flying over....what a sight !

halfway thru the channel I was divebombed twice by an Anson , he flew off without even scratching my paintwork

Ive seen lots of aircraft since then too...the game is much more enjoyable a this speed I think

Lower TC is the best, or nothing at all like I mentioned earlier, :yep:

Would have been a shame to miss that. Glad you're finding it more fun! :woot:

I did not know that tc can affect game this much. From now on only small or none tc for me.
Thanks guys for the refreshing info...

Wait until he learns that it is possible for the player to hear contacts on the hydrophone almost twice as far as the AI sonarman. That slowed down my play a huge amount.

Dive
All stop
Scan 360 degrees
Ahead standard
Surface the ship
Cruise 1 - 2 hours at 32 - 64 TC

repeat

In aircraft prone areas the TC is 8 - 16

It sometimes takes me 2 -3 gaming sessions to even get to my patrol area. :88)

There is a 'no deaf sonarman' fix available for GWX. It adjusts the values in the Sensor.dat file and purports to improve the detection range considerably. :sunny:

Any chance of a link?

DOH! Thanks! :yeah:

Edit: couldn't find any definitive mod out there. Still checking for mods to sensor.dat...

Happy to oblige:

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=107989

The 'fix' claims to increase the crew detection range to 25km (as taking it to a full 30 evidently breaks the "follow nearest contact" order).

I think the DL link is dead, but if anyone is interested they can get it here:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=WNXCMMW9

Hope it helps! :sunny:

Edit: Just looking through the mod, there is a Sensors.dat (in the optional folder) that takes the crew to the same hardcoded limit as the player - 30 km each. Worth testing, have fun!

Thanks for the link Fish. Not sure I want to go back to 8km, and the links for Alert Sonarman 16km are dead.

I guess it is time to download TT tweaks and mod my own sensors.dat. Rubini stated that it was just a couple of tweaks in the hydrophone section and was identical to the 8km version.

If I compare his modded sensor.dat with mine, it shouldn't be too hard to figure out what changes are required.

Unless someone has still has a 4 year old mod zipped on their hard drive they'd be willing to email... :haha:

No email, but here's the 16k version:

no fix for tc and aircrafts? I was doing 128x from Bergen and I didnt run into an aircraft until Torshavn and also there are no aircrafts at nite.

bojan811 05-15-11 12:23 PM

Last night i started patrol in the north sea near scapa flow in jan `40 and i had at least 5-6 crash dives because of the RAF.

My tc was something between 128-256...every 1-2 hours new planes came to attack my sub.

Am afraid to think what will happen late in war if I make it until then.

All day attacks...there is no radar yet on aircrafts so no attack from sky at night.

ok thanks i seem to have finally fixed the problem by launching the game using sh3 commander. at 256x or slower i get lots of aircraft activity. even when submerged at snorkel depth i was bombed a couple times without warning. i also experienced night attacks. basically every convoy i face in atlantic now is escorted by aircraft who quickly sight my periscope. very realistic now.

If close enough, an airplane can see you even if you are submerged. Calm seas such as you get in the pacific and mediterranean and clear water are as transparent as glass. A lucky plane flying above you or close to that can an will see you, even without the periscope up. A supermod to 'sh4' added that to the game, forcing you to dive to 30 or 40 meters to avoid detecton. To be fair, i do not know sh3 enough to say that the game computes that, but it is the case.

When we are talking about the bombing by the planes how deep must you dive to be safe from impact.
The planes in sh3 do not drop the depth charges only bombs right (talking about bomber planes)?

In what range are they effective against your sub?
