The best of British Steve....take great care mate (you should be fine once you have confirmation of a backup).
TBH though I would still search the SS forum because I know one or two have performed the operation successfully already, I simply can't remember who they were though :damn: |
Now, a little prayer to the CPU Gods for Steve.

Well, I don't know how to tell if it actually worked or not, but it restarted with no problems, and that's always a good thing. :sunny:

Well I added the PAE switch and she boots up fine. When I go to My Computer and look at Properties there it still shows only 3.25 GB of RAM. Is it supposed to acknowledge the extra RAM there or not? (I actually have 6 GB of RAM installed, but just getting a full 4 would be nice.)
Also I tried the 3GB switch for XP a while back and couldn't get it to work - the only likely reason I could find was that it probably wouldn't work because I have a 1 GB RAM gfx card and apparently if the video RAM is that high it conflicts with devoting a full 3GB to other processes or something because there's not enough left over given the 3.25 GB limit with XP normally. But if Windows is recognizing the additional RAM because of the /PAE switch, could I then try adding the /3GB switch as well, would the recognition of the extra RAM make any difference? Or is it strictly one or the other? |

Steve, Steve, Steve, Steeeeeve! :-? It's now the 14th!
10-12-2010 10:56 PM Sailor Steve Well, I don't know how to tell if it actually worked or not, but it restarted with no problems, and that's always a good thing. :sunny: |
WHAT?
When I boot it up now it goes to a "Do you want to start in Windows or start XP normally?" screen. The keys don't work, so after 30 seconds it starts in Windows XP, just like always, so I don't worry about it, as it takes three minutes to load everything anyway. The game plays just like always, and I can't tell any difference yet, so I really wasn't concerned enough to say anything. SO THERE! :O: |
Sorry for shouting, didn't notice you in any other threads (wasn't really paying attention!).
But now you're here and safe :yeah::woot::yeah::woot::yeah: |
@Steve:
Can you do me a favor and right-click on My Computer and then select Properties and look at the info there and tell if it acknowledges any extra RAM as opposed to the XP "max" of 3.25 GB? I enabled the PAE switch and it boots and runs fine so far but in the Properties of My Computer it still shows 3.25 GB of RAM and I don't know if it's supposed to acknowledge the change there or not. |

Or is that a disguised invitation? :rotfl2: Quote:

Are you sure you didn't enable the /POLTERGEIST switch by mistake? :D That is interesting, I'll have to look at mine again when I get home... should prolly do some googling on the /PAE switch to see if it IS supposed to acknowledge the added RAM in My Computer's Properties box or not. If not I guess you're just supposed to take it on faith that it's working? |
As far as I'm aware the OS won't recognise or acknoledge the additional RAM but your changes should allow it to operatethe extra memory available.
I'd PM Jaesen, he'll no doubt explain it in more understandable terms. |
I'd just like to have some way of confirming that it's working... there was info in the documentation at the URL that was posted about how some hardware was not compatible with the PAE switch, but the impression I got was that if this were the case the system wouldn't boot or you'd get errors and have to shut down Windows even if it did get up and running initially.
So far I've not had these problems, just don't know whether to take that as a confirmation that the switch is working or not. OTOH I haven't played any games yet so maybe I'll notice a real difference when I load SH3 again. |
I'd have thought the acid test would be once your system refuses to run the game because of the amount of additional mods, one would perform the above action and realise their changes had taken effect when the game started to load and run again as was previously the case.
|
Well, that's a thought - I know there are a couple that were definitely too much for my system before, perhaps I'll try them again and see what happens.
