Hello Dissaray,

I was at 15x zoom. I didn't noticed at 1x or 6x zoom levels. Ok
I just went back into game. The gyro angle stays at 000 between 359.9 and 0.9 at 1x, 6x and 15x zoom levels. Maybe I'm looking at too much perfection when it comes to hitting a target. If the gyro angle moves that much at a long distance. I would be missing the ship. If it was a big ship I would have a better chance of hitting. Smaller ship, more likely a miss.

The reason I was trying a longer shot at 45 degree angle is I have a convoy and practice makes perfect. John P Cromwell invented this technique and I want to learn to shoot as well as other players here when it comes to manual targeting with out map contacts update turned on. If I can shoot with map contacts turned on then I can practice and find then and sink em with map contacts turned off.

I have GWX and MAGUI mods installed.

On the TDC page is a gyro dial with numbers from 0 to 9. The needle on that dial shows a more precise value of the gyro angle, but only the unit-digit, and the decimal ( so, 4.7 if the gyro is 14.7). If that needle points straight up to 0 the gyro angle is exactly 0.

However, the gyro angle doesn't need to be exactly 0. Within 350 and 10 degrees is fine. Outside that you need to set the aproximate range at the time of shooting. If you don't the torpedo ends up a bit to the side of the aiming point. This is due to the fact that the torpedo is fired from a couple of 10s of meters forward from the periscope, and the torpedo also needs room to turn. This creates what is known as a parallax effect. Hitman created a drawing to illustrate it. If you search for parallax you should be able to understand what I mean. Strangely though, this parallax adjustment becomes bigger when the range is close. If the target is near the torpedo needs to make a sharper turn. If the target is relatively far away the adjustment appoaches a 0 angle.

Perhaps there is still a slight miss-alignment in the camera settings of the 2 zoom levels. This would depend on the kind of mod you use. I can't say anything about this. If you want to investigate this I suggest you make a test scenario with a ship going at a specific speeed and course that you know, and set the TDC accordingly.

If you set the target speed right, gyro angle to 0 (or set the range appropriately with any other gyro), and also AOB correct, the torpedo should hit where the line was when you fired the torpedo. IF you opened the torpedo doors beforehand. If you don't do that there is a delay before firing, which could have caused your hits towards the end of the target.

Thanks Pisces,

I was thinking of setting up a test mission to practice at different distances with a 45 degree angle and see what I can learn from this. I want to find out if the length of the ship and the slight movement of the periscope still reading a 000 gyro angle will be that much of a different. By practicing I can figure out the best place to aim for certain ships and this would give me an ideal for all ships.

Do you know of any post that explain how to set up a test mission.

Thanks

I don't realy remembered how I learned it. I just digged into the mission designer part of the forum. http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/forumdisplay.php?f=198 And simply trial and error.

a few things to keep in mind:

Place the spawn/start location of the target atleast 34km away from your own location, or it won't spawn.

Use the free camera to check if it really does spawn (fly to it). But use land based objects like lightships in between you and the targets as 'breadcrumbs' to show you the way to it.

If the target doesn't spawn there may also be an issue with the time and date of spawning, and the start time of the mission. Unfortunately I'm too tired to explain this correctly, or even remember how to do it correctly.

Hello Pisces,

I did a search and found a manual for using the editor. All morning I have been practicing with different ships, lengths and distance to see what I can learn from this.
I'll let you know what I learned.
