I might be the only one but I have problem with this particular ship. Don't take me wrong I am in no way criticizing your mod, I actually believe that SH4 is lacking large tonnage ships.
Here is my problem: whenever I try to gun one of these ships on the surface and after it sinks, I try to dive to periscope depth and my damage (it's usually aft or bow torpedo room) gets 100% damage and my sub sinks.

I tried to uninstall it and the problem disappeared....

Running mostly stock 1.5 with some minor (graphic) mods.

Any ideas?

Not sure about that, never happened to me before, when I re-install SHIV I will look into it more.

The japanese merchant marine didn't have any large MFMs that look like this (according to ONI-208Jrev), but she's sure pretty.

re

Tater, you are not entirely correct, they did operate some large merchants.Tonan Maru class comes to mind, they were nearly 20,000 tons i believe.

Sink it all the time, never had that problem, TMO1.7 & RSRD.

Necro-bump, I know, but I am looking at merchant ships right now...

It's not the size, its the SHAPE.

The real Heian M. is a passenger that is almost a split, and also has kingposts. This mod actually bears a closer resemblance to Saipan M. (5533 t.) except if she's really almost 500' long.

Also, she (and her sister) was not a freighter, she was an Auxiliary Submarine Depot Ship.

Hi Tater,

The model bears a similarity to the Nigitsu Maru, so when I've dropped it in to my install, that's what I've named it as.

AFAIK, the Akitsu and Nigitsu Maru's were very similar, if not sisters.

A Japanese guy called Motoyuki Iwashige's been building up a collection of WW2 merchant ships in model form on his site:

http://ww6.enjoy.ne.jp/~iwashige/history.htm

I think you've found it already, if remember rightly, but I thought I'd post a link into it.

There's also a thread over at the ModelWarships.com forum as well:

http://www.shipmodels.info/mws_forum...p?f=51&t=39282

It's up to 22 pages and still going!:o

There's also this page I found as well:

http://www.aeronautic.dk/MarineArtgallery-T-Yuki.htm

There's a selection of paintings of merchant vessels about half way down, including the Akitsu and Nigitsu Maru's.

Hope that helps!

Yeah, Nigitsu is perhaps a better match except that the superstructure on this model is really weird. VIrtually all jap ships I have seen have the bridge 1 deck above the rest (as Nigitsu shows). That monolithic box looks totally "wrong" to me and make her stand out.

Yeah, I know all those sites. I had bookmarked that art site, but forgot about it long ago---that link rocks!

Looks great miner! Any chance we could get into the forum download section here. FF and I just don't seem to shake hands but I'll keep trying...SK

edit...Ah!...got it on the 5th try, can't figure them out sometimes...SK

edit2...Do I need to be "at the desk" to inject this?

tater 08-28-10 03:04 PM

It is nigitsu, you are right. She's just Akitsu with the deck cut off. Far better to make an accurate Nigitsu, though the hull form of the original SH4 model is crap I think (the devs gave her a warship" hull, when she needed a "merchant" hull (slab-sided, flat bottomed, and more boxy).

I have plans for Nigitsu, so I think I can make her look better.

Or I could scan them and miner could do it, cause he actually knows what he's doing :)

GerritJ9 08-28-10 04:58 PM

Jentschura lists "Akitsu Maru" and "Nigitsu Maru" on page 61 as Army air transports with flight decks. They were requisitioned while under construction for completion as landing ships with flying-off decks. Side and plan views are included of "Akitsu Maru" as she was to be modified in 1944 with a larger flight deck in order to permit aircraft to land. No photos unfortunately.

(note the cut-out shapes near rthe fron of the superstructure where the walkways are.)

miner1436 08-28-10 10:56 PM

If you want to send me the plans, I could try to do it.

tater 08-28-10 11:03 PM

Cool, I'll scan them for you, they're in Iwashige's book. Note that they don't have hull forms.

They do have side view, top view and front views of superstructure.

The "Heian" model you have now—aside from the bad hull you were given by the devs—is actually pretty close already.

I had a go in wings, too, I can include my attempt at the obj file (I'm a total noob :) ).

Will get it to you tomorrow, latest.

tater 08-28-10 11:38 PM

PM sent with image.

tater 08-28-10 11:47 PM

PM with obj file WIP
