PS3 here too. For most of the above reasons.

The one gripe I have is the lack of DLC support for many titles. (oblivion, fallout, GTA......)

The 360 seems to have a bonus in this area.

Yep, M$ has paid to have the DLC on the 360 first BUT it has already been confirmed that Fallout 3 & GTA 4 DLC will be coming to the PS3. IIRC the exact words were "Financial agreements have a time limit".;)

Although it sucks having to wait, I can wait for DLC. If the same was happening for game patches then I'd be fuming.

It's a pity they can't (won't) patch the vampire cure glitch in the Oblivion GOTY version. That can really screw up your game.

I guess the next question is:

What's everybody's PSN ID?

mine: r33c13b0y

Mine is treblein99

A few different ones. At least one was a 60GB as well.

And the fans are loud to me. Clarity is more important than volume. I don't have up to 1500 WATTS on demand to go loud, but to support a massive dynamic range.

And there is not one fan in my entire stereo cabinet. You can also crank the volume control on my stereo to max without signal and you will have complete silence - no external interference noise.

I'm guessing the PS3's fans according to reports, cranks up pretty badly after 30 minutes to an hour into a Blu-Ray. People are complaining that its so loud that they can hear it over simple audio dialog from the movie. So it seems I am not the only one.

PS. As long as you aren't playing a game, or watching a movie, this won't happen to you:

My old fan on my video card couldn't even get that loud.

Here is a another:

PPS. Typical forum questions:

I heard good things about how silent the PS3 was, but since I bought a 60GB about 6 weeks ago im finding the fan very loud. No matter what im doing, playing a game, watching a film, or just simply leaving the console on, the fan will come on and become loud after about 10 minutes. The fan can clearly be heard over films. Also the fan doesnt quieten down until I turn the console off. The top (right hand side) also becomes hot to touch.

The worst thing is that new top of the line blu-ray players come with fans. :damn: :damn:
Hi-fi or video equipment should have zero fans (1st golden rule :D ).
Thats why they use such big enclosures in the first place. To be able to dissipate heat without the use of fans, which in any case add background noise thats disturbing to say the least when you are watching a movie or listening to quiet dialog.

^ Both of those 40GB models have been put into their 'clean' cycle. The 40/80GB models both have the option of running their fans at high speed for around 5mins to expel gathered dust. Proven and added in FW 2.0. If those PS3's were actually running like that during normal use, they would automatically shut down to prevent further damage. The interwebs is full of scaremongering.

My 60GB launch model is coming up for 2 years old and it's never loud to the extent that's it's audible above any content I'm playing.

Hell, I've been on my PS3 most of the afternoon and I'm actually posting this from it now and the loudest thing I can hear is my 7 month daughter snoring 2 rooms away.

Maybe I'm not making myself clear - even barely audible is unacceptable. Out of curiosity, put your in a stereo cabinet and see how it performs. I already know the answer to this.

But the fan is just one aspect of it. Still waiting on a decent BR player from a good stereo company. Marantz, McIntosh, Rotel, heck, I'd even look at Mark Levinson right now, but no one has bothered to make one. This doesn't bode well for the format I'd say.

I'm no console fan. I have a PS3.

I find the game choices for PS3 poor. They have a few good ones out their but mostly shooters or hack and slash. PS3 is an uber PC. It acts like one. I have a mouse and keyboard connected to it and runs its own OS and I can serf the net etc. Why they call them consoles anymore is beyond me?

XBox 360 has more choices and variety of games. Also a very friendly MS interface to Vista. I don't own a 360 because I won't invest in it. Before you wonder about my PS3 I also didn't buy it. Was given as a free gift for purchasing a Sony vaio laptop for my wife a year ago.

In the end of the day I would choose my PC. :smug:

But the problem is, not all good games are available for PC. ;)

danlisa 01-02-09 07:28 AM

As nice as this discussion is, Neal asked specifically about a replacement console and the differences between them.

My first post probably covered this, so noises while using the PS3 is rather a non issue. Especially considering the sound a Xbox makes. Apart from game choice (which is rather unique to the individual) the PS3 is the only one that offers Neal's wants.

So, listen to Subman1, who I suspect wished he lived in an acoustic bubble to remove all atmospheric noise, and not buy a new console, or except that most high powered electronic items require some additional cooling.

Failing that, get a Wii.:p It has none of the above but is fun for all the family (if you are the athletic type), me, I'm a couch gamer.

EDIT - To help you somewhat, here's the current Library of PS3 games - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...tation_3_games

Well that depend on who you depend on.

Most uber game companies have switch over to console. Yet they make PC game but are really console game crossed over to PC. So most big games from EA are console based game that work on PC platforms.

Subman your right 100%

Metal Gear Solid. That series is worth the money you need to buy PS3. I've played the series all the way from 8bit Nintendo. Awesome series. :yep:

I don't know I never was into metal gear even though I have it for my nes the original. I prefered dragon warrior than metal gear or contra type games. Then again if they would make contra now it would resemble Deadspace...:hmm:

The NES MGS's werent as story driven as the ones that started from PS1 onwards. Sure, the're some paranormal stuff in the stories, but it fits in well, you just cant stop playing. Oscar worth stuff most of the stuff they write for MGS.
