After 29 years of marriage we know each others thoughts. Don't need a special day to show it.

Being single sucks...

I agree with Biggles, we're not all some sort of "socially wanted" (I've put it in bracket as everyone has his own explanation of it).

Yeh, the States are just mad about ANY holiday. What have we made from our old traditions? Not that I would agree on anything that celebrates love in such a manner, now or in the past, but our society has a nose for turning everything for the worst. Once again, it's those who look at others that suffer. I'm not talking about "people without someones" as Biggles put it, I'm talking about those who can't afford in this society to enjoy one special day (as it's being promoted). Guess who WON'T be getting a diamond necklace and 3 or so dozen roses?

There are many reasons why one might not like valentines in its current form. Be glad you don't. You're not missing anything. Just capitalism and liberalism forcing you to do something to "belong" to the crowd. For all the others, who have their better halfs, make them show you love them. Just for the sake of it. Be sure it's NOT the ONLY day you do it. Otherwise, you're no better than those who look at this through the money prism.

Dude, nobody says you have to BUY a card. Make one! Write a poem. Compose a song. It's the thought, and the effort, that counts, not how much money you paid for that fancy Hallmark.

Luckily women go crazy if you actually do something yourself, you dont need to use huge sums of money. Nice dinner and a cake, WILL work, and they will return the effort..;) Cooking is fun and it helps get chicks, trust me.

My girl and I are just having a relaxing evening online together. I composed a short piece of piano music to give, I have a little red wine. That's what V-Day is about for me. Spending time with your partner, not showering them with commercial crap.

If you're single, may this day bring to you what I found three years ago - someone with which to share your lives.

If you're dating someone, may this day be one in which you both appreciate the little things in each other, and remember there are 364 other days in the year in which you can do the same.

If you're married, toast to another day happily together. I'm happy for each and every one of you.

:)

Biggles 02-14-08 02:45 PM

I guess adults live this day in a more relaxed way. Not as much pressure what I can understand. But for a teenager, attention is important, and the lack of it might feel heavy. That's why I'm rather down today, seeing many students in my school having so much fun and all. I'm a lonely person by nature, not only single and so, but with few friends. Yet there are many who has it much worse than me.

Oh yeah, that's the truth. Listen to me, I've been single all my life! And I'm 17 damnit!
But I think I mentioned some sort of story from my past...;)

Well what's to say? I met this girl in England (I know what you're thinking, but she's swedish).:rotfl:
Anyway, eh.....well, okay, we started to talk, just randomly, the more we talked the more I liked her, the more I noticed how good looking she was. She was smart, funny, sympathetic, a good listener, mad as a balloon, but extremely likeable. And I fell for her rather quickly. It's not weird when I fancy a girl just like that. It is, however, when a girl likes me. This was one of the rare (unique? Quite possibly) moments when I liked a girl just as much as she liked me. I had no experience from before, none at all, so I was a nervous wreck, but she was more experienced (she's about 1.5 months older than me). I thought things was taking a good turn when she said that her hands were cold and wondered if I could keep them warm by holding them in my hands;)
At the same night I met her I admitted that I liked her, and she said likeways, so we parted, hoping to meet eachother next day.
We didn't until the evening. Took us several hours to get away from all the other teens, but when we were finally alone, we walked out on Torquays Pier (her idea, again holding hands, after she claimed that one of her hands, the one closest to mine, was very cold). After sitting there for awhile, took it abit further and...well, to cut it short, that night was the first time I kissed a girl. This far the only time too.

That's my story...it's longer, very complicated, and it's still going on, but I'm happy for what I had. Since that night (July 8th, 2007), I haven't had a time with a girl that comes even close to that.

Oh, almost forgot:

NO! No I am not the brain specialist...no, no I am not....YES! Yes I am!"

AntEater 02-14-08 03:07 PM

Who's that Valentine guy anyway??
Karl Valentin, famous german comedian??
Ok, Wikipedia just educated me about Valentine the Martyr, Geoffrey Chauncer and connection to Lupercalia.
But absolutely zero german cultural tradition, like Halloween and Santa Claus it has just been imported by consumerism.
But I gave up on protesting those plagiarism holidays since that complaining gets you nowhere.

Anyway, I got a card and a box of heart shaped sweets from a girl engaged to another man without asking for it...
Ok, I wrote a short poem as well (in the subway on the way to Uni), but I assure you it was perfectly honest and just about friendship.
We just get along extremely well and kind of drag each other through final exams.
Ok, but still better than the average "not me" valentine's day of the last 5-20 years and a lot better than going out with two hot sisters on a Valentine's night in 2004 and going home alone...
:)

Got my wife a gold bangle that she had desired for ahile. The look on her face when I gave it to her was priceless!:D

Kapitan_Phillips 02-14-08 05:36 PM

Nice story Biggles, what happened? Its unusual for a girl to make the first moves :rotfl:

And by the way again

"MY BWAIN HURTS!"

Biggles 02-14-08 05:59 PM

hohum...yes what happened....

In short: I live in Stockholm, she lives in Göteborg (Gothenburg). That's roughly 600 Kilometers apart...We decided we were too young to try a long distance relationship (at least for such a long distance). Then we kinda fell apart from eachother for a while, for long I didn't know why, but I was certain that it was 'cause I was an idiot at the time (in my own special way). Lost contact with her for...3-4 months. Then the story takes up again on her birthday, which I remembered. I had her cellphone number (I couldn't make myself delete it, although I figured I'd never use it). But more as an experiment than anything else, I sent her an SMS on her birthday, congratulating her. I expected the worst of a response, something between nothing at all, to a "go to hell!" But she became extremely happy, and then we found eachother on Facebook, got her E-mail, and now we have a steady contact to eachother.:D

I first figured that the real reason we fell apart was that we were too different in our social lifes. I mean, as you say, it is unusual that the girl "makes the moves". She had (has) much more experience than me, she said so herself, then I thought that well, for me it was obvious, she was that sort of girl that everybody loves, in the center of everything, (not egocentric, but you know, people like to be around her) She's so cute and I figured that's the way it works. Me on the other hand, is a nobody, I can leave a group of people and NOONE will notice I'm gone.

Then she told me, when we found eachother again, that we're really the same on that level. She's just like me: Someone that noone notice, few friends, often alone. I was so shocked when I heard it, that I thought she was pulling my leg, but she's serious. I think that's so utterly weird that I can't really describe it. I know she's telling me the truth, 'cause I trust her, for some reasons and things she said, that I think is a little to personal to take up here. She also said that the two days she spent with me were very different from anything she's been through before with any other guy...in a good way;)

Oh yeah....that part huh?

Well let's take a look at it then, Mr. Gumby!

Kapitan_Phillips 02-14-08 06:05 PM

You're preaching to the wrong person about long distance relationships, my friend. It cost me about £1200 to go see Hannah for two weeks, and that was minus a hotel room.

But damn was it worth every single penny. When you store up love and emotion for three years because you cant see or touch a person, when you finally do get to, its the greatest feeling on earth.

By the way,

"NO, NO, MY BWAIN IN MY HEAD!"

Biggles 02-14-08 06:22 PM

yeah, I know that some people can make it work but some factors are still to be considered:

1. We're both relatively young (she turns 18 at the end of October, I in the middle of december.)
2. She's being having a long distance relationship before, and it didn't turn out well. You make promises you can't keep, and the bloke cheated on her (mad as a hatter that guy), so she doesn't feel so comfortable about it.

But the real killer in this story, the one that could make me laugh and cry at the same time, is that we both come from the same town, same neighbourhood, and that we once lived no more than about 2-3 kilometers from eachother. That was 12.5 years ago, before I moved up from that town. This girl is the only reason I'd ever wanted to live there again.

To get the story on:
Ohhh.........It'll have to come out!

Friendship is like peeing your pants. Everyone can see it but only you can feel the warmth. :yep:
