Not really, I enjoyed SH3 and GWX, but wanted a change. I am enjoying the Pacific Theatre and Fleet Boats, it is nice to get a break from U-Boats for awhile.

Plus modders here have done great work with the Pacific, yet there are still those that say wait until the GWX Crew get to SH4, it can all get a little tiring.

To put it bluntly, Im sick and tired of uboats and the proxy gloriifcation of the 3rd riech.

I'll stop there, as i feel raging tangent building within me that will make this thread explode much more then it already will.

Not really diehards Stabiz. Personally I feel the original post discredits what is being done now with SH4 and the modders who are doing it. There are some talented guys working over SH4 now. Perhaps this is why they are touchy? Not to mention that the "bad boys of GWX know what they are doing' certainly undermines the works going on with SH4. Looking around the SH4 mod forums, I see a lot of bad boys making a good game, great! Not to mention new faces with new ideas and talent. Every dog has his day and it is time for the current modders to have their day.

The uboats will be in the Pacific when the add-on arrives, maybe before. I foresee a uboat SH4 forum and mod forum in the future. This looks to be the course. I have no desire at the moment to play the uboats and I suspect the fellas active in the SH4 forums do not want to play the uboats.

I agree completely, consider working on a game that everybody
disrestpected proactively from day one and working in the shadow
of giants would make anyone a bit defensive about their work.
especially under the impending release of the master work
and knowing that that is the standard they will be measured
by. I for one can understand a bit of touchiness what I dont
understand is the respect thats commanded isnt given.

the percentage of previously experienced modders dedicated
to sh4 is small compared to sh3 and all the old hands about.
in sh3 there are new modders but the ratio seems much smaller
those that need to learn to mod tend to just wish when its
a large community with talent I suppose.

the way I learned it your never given a wish without
being given the power to make it come true.
I wished for a hot rod sub and got one
and I wished for an authentic river class frigate
and got one. I may have been lazy assed for the
last three or for months but I burned up the beginning
of this year learning how to get those things.

its always been my opinion that both are great games and that in full
measure of potential both games are quite equal it just seems
that no one recognizes that fact and you know its to my mind
a credit to ubi that such is true.

Just my opinion

I do not believe anyone modding SH4 thinks they are working in the shadow of giants. I don't think Leovampire owns a copy of SH3 and would have no idea what GWX is like. That goes for a lot of new faces and talents working over the SH4 files. Right now the benchmarks are being made in SH4....ROW, RSRD, RFB, TM, MSN, Longer Evasion. These are my benchmarks. Not the Uboat campaign. The uboats had their history and historical accuracy is being obtained in GWX. The same is being done with the benchmarks now in motion in SH4 the Pacific. Those are the ones I named above.

If your insinuating that we should all bow down to the "almight" GWX and pay it hommage and adulations of respect.....

All i can say to that, is as a person who's been in the subsim community before the Grey wolves was conceptualized, the effort put into the mod is worth respect, but the reputation the mod has garnered is misplaced.

Apparently, not many people know what this place was like before "supermods". GWX is built off community effort that spans the time span of, almost 4 years of invidual modder effort. In other words, they didn't come up with "GW" all by themselves. You know what came before GW or GWX? Unified campaign. Before that, Harbor traffic and improved convoys. Trace it back far enough, and GW's lineage begins with Jace11 and Rubini, not to mention a host of other modders who focused on different things besides campaign work.

GWX is a great modpack, but it is not the father of all that is innovative and good in Sh3. Truth be told, some of the more innovate modifications in SH3 can acutally be found in the NYGM mod. At least two features of which, in my opinion, make GWX's approach on the same modification look like second rate solutions.

The shame of it is, most of those "on the other side", consider SH4 a piece of garbage. I've read plenty about how some have no intention of even trying it out! GWX is definitely a masterpiece. I admit, I still play GWX, and I can't wait for the next update. There's nothing wrong with that. But to call this sim trash over an admitedly rocky start, just don't make sense to me:nope: They don't know what they're missing. And furthermore, at least we have a working radio, with news broadcasts to boot! I know we don't have the radio room, but be honest: How often do you go into the radio room anyway? :smug:

No Ducimus I am trying to equate your work and its quality and
difficulty with their achievements and I wasnt meaning at all
to imply anything about the experienced modders of sh4 more
really the new modders in sh4.

not trying to demean good sir trying to promote your cause
and that of equanimity and good fellowship.

Excuse me? "the respect that is COMMANDED isnt given"....... please, stop right there, I have not played SH3 nor GWX, and after this tripe, never will.

AFAIK in this little black ducks pond, respect is EARNED, not COMMANDED, how can you come into the SH4 Mods Workshop with a straight face and COMMAND respect for something I for one have not even seen. Go back to the Atlantic dude.

You misunderstand me sir I mean that the respect that those sh3 players
demand isnt payed forward by them to the sh4 mod community.

conversely I must say that I as an sh3 player when I express an interest
in sh4 and the sh4 community not only dont feel welcome to play or discuss
sh4 I feel I am being told Im not allowed to be an sh4 modder because
I didnt abandon immediately and come over

Tis called jealously cause they know the SH3 engine will NEVER look good as SH4. And that eats them!

MM,

Your post, i think was poorly worded, as it left itself open to negative interprettation.

I think what you'll find, is that for some of us (maybe many of us?), we're a little tired of having GWX ramrodded down our throats. As far as im concerned GWX, like SH3, is part of "yesterday" and "remember when", not here and now.

Silent hunter 4 is a new game, with a new theater, i like to think of it as a new beginning; a chance to take lessons learn from the past, and forge a better here and now.

Mush Martin 12-06-07 10:05 PM

Mayhaps your right about the wording I guess
after all the meaning of what we say is how
other people take it.

you said
"Silent hunter 4 is a new game, with a new theater, i like to think of it as a new beginning; a chance to take lessons learn from the past, and forge a better here and now"
(someone please teach me how to do the cool quote thing)

As do I ducimus
I have as RDP and others will attest always
maintained my aim on sh4 I have always
prefered the american boats and the
pacific campaign was my introduction to
submarine warfare back with Silent Service
on 8 bit nintendo.

since then I have spent years with my
nose in books and documentaries on the
tv and visited countless websites pursuing
the passion for it.

as a player when I joined I started to learn
to mod on sh3 and wanted to move to sh4
after i had learned what I needed to. I would
finish my education as it were at the school
I am enrolled at so as I can retire to this wonderful
Island I know in the pacific that I land my seaplane
on the beach of in IL-2 and build me a secret
submarine RastaNaziPirate Base

I have owned sh4 since
its release date and have never once uttered
a discouraging word against it.

I Love this game
I Love this community SS that is.
I Love SH3
I Love SH4 and agree that its the future
all we can do is conduct ourselves as Officers and
Gentlemen and Hope it catches on.

[Edit] And Sauce for the goose months before SH4
was out I was named not for a german or english
captain
(The Theatre I play in and my heritage respectively)
I took the Name of an American Submariner who
Strongly promoted the idea that a submarine
at battle depth was the equal of any ship
in single combat.

Thanks Ducimus I appreciate your post and
will be kicking about both front lawns hopefully
without stepping on anybodys toes

skwasjer 12-06-07 10:16 PM

Oh no, not again...

Why do we keep comparing a game that has had 4 years of mod-time with a game that has just had 7 months?

Want to compare? Compare both stock games, have fun! :rotfl:

Becuase they've Earned it.

No disrespect intended at all. Just kudos for those who have been Working so hard on SH4 (especially before Peto).

Mush Martin 12-06-07 10:17 PM

Peto what makes you think I dont.

kylesplanet 12-06-07 10:26 PM

SH4 was the first subsim I ever owned. I found this place and I can't put it away for more than a day. I bought it right after patch .02 came out and the difference in this game from then until now is unreal. I bought SH3 and played it for a little while but I just couldn't get into firing on my own flag and I mean no disrespect to SH3 but it's like an Atari 2600 next to SH4. I gave SH3 to my neighbor.

Thank you SH4 modders for making this game the very best I've ever played, getting me more interested in WW2 sub history and providing so much info here at Subsim.:yep:

Mush Martin 12-06-07 10:29 PM

@kylesplanet

Thats what it was like for all of us on our first
be prepared for a lifetime of enjoyment of the
