I saw it the other day, as everyone else it was at the Luzon strait.
I got the a couple of short videos although http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WpSSJwDKIxQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWeLS70VClA I'm afraid they are a bit too dark, the original ones are not so dark but once I upload them to youtube they get darker; if anybody knows how to make them clearer I'll upload them again. |
followed it
It's funny how I found it in the Luzon strait (As Always). I Happen to use a mod where you have a modern submarine, Top speed 36 knots. I don't remember the exact speed of this ghost ship, but it was something around 35 as I barely caught up with it with full speed. Strange how it suddenly disappeared...:hmmm:

I have it in my sights.
As I write this, the Barbarinna is in contact of the Dutchman. Date: 06/24/44. North of Luzon. Coordinates: N 21'08", E 121'02"; Time: 0252 hrs. It is heading due east, right at my position; however my deck gun is taking too long to load, so I will probably just be able to wave as it sails by.
Note: First shot with deck gun was short. But I got two more shots off at a range of 2,000 yds with the deck gun. Both passed through the target. It is moving away in a northerly/easterly direction at 23.5 kts. It is real. |
And now you can build a model of it, and it glows in the dark as well!

Still I have a couple of savegame approaching the ship, is a very mystic experience, specially in the night....but is damn fast, if you are a little bit off in the interception course, no matter what you could do, those sail will go more fast than your "modern" engines.

I added a fleet of them into RSRD once, near the Solomons, it funny, they attack the Japs, sunk several DD's...Course unfair battle, since they don't take damage, but the Japs attacked them back...Not sure how those old smooth bore cannon can sink a ship, but it was funny watching about 8 Dutchmen take on a Kongo TF.

:o:yeah: but the kongo?

armistead
Wouldn't you know it? Armistead ran out of Japanese ships to sink in RSRDC, so he made a convoy of Flying Dutchmen, and tried to put an end to them. What an imagination! A little nuts, but BOLD. No Happy Dale Sanitarium for him. Send him to the line, as a crazy skipper with an imagination is perfect for subsim. I wonder if he found out who stole the ice cream yet.:D

....this remember me the adventures tales of one guy....do you know don quixote and his windmill?:har:

I see this ship about once every "war".
Looks cool! |

I wonder....
Kudos to the developers! The fabled existence of this ghost ship adds interest to the game. Late afternoon in the S-boat, December 1941, 20 miles due south of Formosa, I stumbled upon a faint sonar contact, 6700 yards distant, due east. Visibility was perfect but nothing was in sight.
I hit the throttle --- no simple matter with enemy aircraft on patrol. Four hours at flank speed brought me no closer. As dusk fell I peered into the grey horizon, expecting the appearance of the ghostly apparition. Alas, nothing appeared. No ghost --- no ship --- nothing but a persistent but invisible sonar contact 6700 yards away, moving at precisely 11 knots --- just fast enough to tease, but too fast to catch in the S-boat. I gave up the chase. Could this have been the Flying Dutchman of lore? |
It just occurred to me --- I may have been chasing a submarine.

I pinged many times to fix the range (6300-6700m). I am playing the stock SH 1.5. From what I read elsewhere in the forum, the stock game doesn't have subs. True?
[Just downloaded TMO, can't wait to load it up.] |
