Hey, what do you know, installed GWX and the fr_help and fr_menu files are now there... I think I am good. Off to patch GWX to 1.03 now, and the SH3 Commander... Thanks a bunch!
|
Great...now go for it
|
Ok, did all the uninstall and install steps specified above. Clean Sh3 install, patch, install GWX, patch, install SH3 Commander. Started a new career via SH3C and I still the same problem!
So, when I hit F1, the first entries are cool, but once I hit Enemies of Germany, instead of getting the enemies (Sept 1st 1939, so it should be Poland at this time) I get the keyboard entries for Time Compression, Even Camera, Periscope and Snorkel Control, and Free Camera Control... :hmm: Then I get nothing for Resupply Info, Uboat & Distance Info, Flotilla News I and Flotilla News II. I can see how maybe the last ones are not applicable this early, and hence could possible be blank at this moment in the war, but the Enemies of Germany weirdness puzzles me... Other than that, the game is running great, and I don't see anything else unusual... |

Re your problem Javigato, I have no idea. But it's 100% GUARANTEED to be an installation problem, otherwise 10,000 other players would have noticed it. I certainly don't have the problem. |
Yea, I suppose it must be an install problem, otherwise like you said, it would be more than 1 person with the problem... The weird thing is that the files the screen is referencing (en_help and en_menu) seem ok... I wonder if I need to look somewhere else, I hope there's a way to manually fix it...
Thanks! |
You know, I was thinking, I ran the SH3 installer with my normal user, I did not specify to run as the Administrator, then for the 1.4 patch, I had to run it as the Administrator, otherwise the patch did not recognize the SH3 version. Then for GWX and SH3Commander, I ran them as the normal user, not Administrator.
Do you guys think this could be it? That unless I run everything as the administrator the installs are suspect? Just wondering, since I am running out of ideas after looking and relooking at the files hoping to find the problem  |
I would recommend you go back to post #14 and follow the instructions to the letter as an administrator on your computer. :yep:
|
Thanks Jim, I will try that and see if it resolves it.

Back in this post... :) Uninstalled and reinstalled as directed in post 14. I did again the clean install of Sh3, this time made sure I ran it as Administrator, reboot, install patch 1.4 also as Administrator, reboot, ran GWX as Administrator, reboot, ran GWX patch 1.03 as Administrator and rebooted.
This time I decided NOT to install SH3Commander, just to see if I can start ruling things out, and I can confirm that the problem is not SH3Cmdr related, because I have the same issue with GWX 1.03 and no SH3Cmdr. As a precaution, I verified the installers and bins, and all checked out prior to installs... I really don't know at this point what can be causing this, and how to correct it, especially since I am the only one with this problem... :damn: The good news is that the game runs fine, so that's cool, and this missing fields in the F1 are not "required" and I should just let go and enjoy the awesome game this is with GWX :D Thanks to all that have chipped in so far to help me out, I really appreciate it, and if someone has any other ideas, please let me know. |
I'm getting annoying, aren't I? ;) So, does the F1 list of options/info really read off of the en_help file? I just tried modifying some entries in the en_help file to see if they show up in game when I hit F1, but they don't, the lists are the same as prior to making the changes, so me thinks the F1 information is being read from somewhere else... Any ideas?

You MUST also install GWX under the Administrator account. |

A fundamental question, how many installs of SH3 do you have? If more than one, are you sure you are running the one you installed GWX into? You certainly wouldn't be the first to say no. ;) Failing that, email me your en_menu and en_help files (email address is in ther SH3Cmdr Help file). I'll have a look. |
Morning JS, I only have one install of SH3, and this last time I did everything as Admin. Anyway, sending you an email with the files. I appreciate your help!

OK, this is Vista related (guys, pls specify if you are using Vista when posting problems as it DOES make a difference).
I'm posting this here as I don't use Vista, so can't help much further. Basically, SH3 is ignoring the installed files and referencing a cache storage of the original files. I am aware that this can happen with Vista thanks to its permission based approach. Indeed, I can recall that some players here have experienced this very problem. However, what I can't recall is how it has been fixed. So, hopefully someone here can recall and find the thread/post that provides the answer. |
Thanks JS! Silly Vista :D Anyway, like you said, hopefully someone will see this and point me in the right direction about this. Thanks again.

I take it you have looked through this thread ?

Yep re-reading again now, and I have a suspicion as to why this is happening, like JS said Vista is probably not recognizing the new en_help and en_menu files... why? Well, this whole time I have kept a folder in the desktop named "SilentHunter Stuff" and that's where I kept the exe's for GWX, SH3Cmdr and some backed-up files (perhaps even en_help and en_menu, not sure)... so when I uninstalled and removed everything related to SH3, I never touched the desktop folder, since I needed to install the mods... so with VISTA as picky as it seems to be, I think I need to keep that folder somewhere else (burn it to a CD or DVD or something like that), so when I uninstall again it has NOTHING what-so-ever in the harddrive related to Sh3. Then install again, making sure to run everything as Admin.
The weird thing is that when I checked those two files in the Sh3 directory they looked like the GWX files, but as JS pointed out to me, when I attached them to an email and he opened them, they were the stock files.... so weird. Well, I will try this tonight, I'll let you know how it goes, hopefully I can report some good news! Thanks again to all. |
Also after uninstalling, I think I will do some disk clean-up and see if I can get rid of any files that are cached...
|
I am pleased to announced I got it to work properly!! Did all the things I mentioned, and now everythings seems cool with the F1. Sounds like it was Vista's indexing and caching causing to reference (some) of the original SH3 files instead of using the new GWX files.
Thanks to all of you who have helped me with this, I really appreciate, you guys are the best! |
Glad to hear your sorted
