They even did a comedy bit showing CTD after CTD after CTD after CTD. Followed by a rant that they are fed up with the whole WWII genre! It was'nt pretty.

X-Play, pfft... Those idiots are still on the air?

And like Sir Big Jugs implies, UBI might not want to make another SH, or support SH4 for very long because of dipping sales. Which I don't think is/will be caused by the genre or time period, it will be because of poor quality control on UBI's part. Morgan and Adam might be tired of WWII, but there is a huge population of gamers still interested in it. |
Look at the age demographic x-play is directed at, then you will understand more of the reviews. The gamers that generally watch that show for the reviews are of the younger age that are not really interested in simming. It's probably best they aim their reviews to that demographic so they don't get hate mail from kids who buy Silent Hunter expecting some sort of arcade submarine shoot em up.
That and Adam/Morgan are a couple of annoying schmucks..... Real simmers know where to go for accurate and intelligent reviews. And for me, those places are most certainly not the joke of a station like G4, Gamespot, and the like..... |

I'll confess I haven't seen this episode but I generally like X-Play. If they're aiming at teenyboppers I guess the in-joke references to political and obscure cultural figures of bygone years implies the kids of today are much more savvy than I give them credit for. I laugh at the jokes but I do wonder who else gets 'em. Dennis Miller maybe?
Look, as has been pointed out X-Play did give SH3 four stars and it's hardly Final Fantasy fare. I'm guessing whoever writes the reviews had a very bad day and might not have gotten the premise of the game. Other folks have pointed out in this thread that the manual is really lacking. There is a particular way to approach playing subsims and if the manual doesn't provide for absolute beginners they're not necessarily going to get what they're supposed to be doing or how best to do it. If it was my review I'm sure a few strategically inconvenient CTDs would have me angry enough to only focus on the bad aspects of the game myself. That said, it doesn't sound like they gave it a fair shot and that's not too unusual. I like the show, it's got personality, but I don't always pay attention to the reviews. They like things I wouldn't touch with a 10' pole and they'll rag on things for issues I find marginal. Everyone has a bad day sometimes and it sounds like Adam and Morgan were having a bad one with Silent Hunter. |

Well, even the casual gamer, if concerned about reviews, should use more than one source as information before making a purchase. But I agree that uninformed reviews can hurt the sales of a game if taken for cold hard fact.
I remember a Gamespot review for a game called Over -G fighters for the Xbox 360. the reviewer actually said that only having a realistic amount of missles made the game boring. So instead of the game hitting the mark in the area of realism, it missed it by making it boring. One reviewer cannot possibly have an unbiased and educated review about every genre on the market. When that happens you get ridiculous comments about a sub being able to submerge as "nifty" |
Its X-Play, an unimportant show on a network no one watches. We probably have more members than X-Play has audience. Didn't see it but if it was like their other reviews it started with a mindless rant about reviewing another WW2 game, then Adam makes an anti-Iraq war or anti-Bush statement, or maybe he was creative and makes a Dick Cheney joke, then a stupid skit with an intern all the while they replay the same 3 second in-game sound clip over and over and if we're lucky they didnt do a gay joke about seamen.
