This is a good thread, im glad something positive has come out about SHIV, im yet to receive my game very soon, been coming in here and reading alot of negative stuff about SHIV that at times it makes me wonder is this game going to be total crap.
Maybe some ppl can't believe that sub games do go on after SH3, :) so they start up the game "Okay wheres the bugs, wheres the bugs! Ahh see I found one! Nope this game is crap" type of response.

Well my fears have been answered this game is going to

The game is great!!! I'm really enjoying it. :yep:

jerryt 04-03-07 03:14 PM

Same here. I am having a great time with the game. Last sub sim I had was Aces of the Deep! :o
This is a long way from the original Silent Hunter from SSI. I remember it took me days to get it installed and running on my mightly 386sx computer, lol.
Yeah it has some bugs, but they are not game killers for me. I'm on my 3rd patrol and just got spotted by the escorts of a convoy I was going to attack. They kept me down for a good three hours. great stuff!

Why, yes! I see the game through rosy colored glasses. But my bunnies are yellow with blue spots:doh:.

All the things they did right:yep:. It is a good thread for what is great in the game.

This thread is a breath of fresh air. I'm actually glad 1.2 isn't out yet, as if it was, I likely would be spending far too much time on computer games. And I need to finish this damn paper so I can get out of college.

I'm new to the sub sim series with SH4. Not been blinded by SHIII II or I that I can recall.

There are some "oops, that was weird" moments, but for the most part, playing as full real as I can get it and doing the manual TDC as well.

Last night I've just completed my third mission in my third start of a career. I'm no master by any means of the term, but last night we wasted 4 merchants while doing a scounting mission in the Clebes(?) Sea.

I've added a couple mods and some of Ducimis' changes and am having a ball.

All those "anti" guys can go suck eggs. :yep:

That pretty much sums me up too. Well said! :)

I'm having a ton of fun so far. The naysayers are really missing out on a lot and patch 1.2 will make things even better!

Meco 04-03-07 04:12 PM

Got SH4 March 23rd.

Applied the patch: 1.1

and only one mod: ParaB's Less radio message mod.

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=108959

I'm on my 7th mission now and having a great time. :ahoy:

I managed to take damage and crawl home to pearl, took out several ships in 3 convoys and evaded hunting destroyers as they dropped charges. In submerged view I even saw the charges blow up near the sub as they dropped. Amazing stuff.

The sunsets are awsome and the water above the surface is far improved from SH3, even though I dont use the clear water setting.

In my gaming time I usualy jump from game to game.. but since I got SH4, it's the only sim I play these days.

I don't know why so many are bitter about the minor shortfalls in the code. I mean.. Unless one was to join the navy of their country I just cant imagine it looking any more real.

I guess, I too am a fan of SH4, and I see no shame in liking a game I enjoy.

Cakewalk 04-03-07 07:15 PM

Hell yeah. SH4 is literally taking up all my free time.:D

Yeah man...it was time for that thread.

TheSatyr 04-03-07 10:14 PM

Unfortunately,I had to quit playing SH4. But only because of the shortcomings of my system. Need a new power supply and a new video card...but don't want to put out the money on a near dead pc...*lol*

From what little playing I did,I think In a year from now vanilla SH4(with all the future patches) will be regarded as a classic. The mods will make it into a monster.

(And by then we will have whole new threads about how DC2 or SH5 is a total piece of garbage...blah blah blah.).

Grothesj2 04-03-07 11:56 PM

I had to upgrade my system with a new power supply and vid card. I dont regret spending the $300+ on it. SHIV plays very well now and I am having a great time with it. Yes there are bugs and issues but SHIII was worse for bugs and unplayability when it launched IMO.

TheSatyr 04-04-07 03:09 AM

Well,my pc is about 3 1/2 years old and showing it's age. I'm going to wait till I can get a shiny new pc before messing with games like SH4 and Neverwinter Nights 2 again...but I'm patient and I know the wait will be worth it.

Last night I installed the patch, didn't re-boot:nope:, had some major stuttering, let out a couple of real " wtfs ", then realized my mistake:D:lol:

Re-booted and all was good:yep: ahhhh....patience.

For myself, I've experienced one or two of the bugs mentioned - only yesterday my patrol came to an abrupt end when I tried to level out after a dive. But in general it's been pretty smooth sailing with SH4. My system certainly struggles with it, and if I'm considering going back to SH3 for the moment that'll be the reason why.

SH4 has its bugs, certainly. But most games do when they're new. And of course we could argue that it shouldn't be that way; that games should be held back until they're found to be in perfect working order. Of course that's impractical in this money-driven corporate world. But as someone mentioned in a thread elsewhere, I always imagine how frustrated the actual developers must feel when they're forced by grasping publishers to release a game they haven't tested enough and know has flaws (First Encounters, anyone?).

The fact is that the developers have toiled long and hard over this game, and I for one think they should be given credit for that. They've done a magnificent job, and they've done it so that we, the boat-simming public, can enjoy an accurate re-creation of World War II submarine warfare for our entertainment and education. I firmly believe that every developer would want to release a perfect game to the market. Practical concerns mean they can't possibly do that: because every project can always be improved, any release date would be too early for them. So we, the consumer, either get flawed releases which then have to be patched repeatedly by devs or the community; or we never get to see the game at all, as in the case of Elite IV, because the developers decide to hold onto it until it's perfect, which it'll never be. Then of course there's the simple fact that the PC is a sod of a platform to develop for, because there isn't a single specification as there is with the 'toy' consoles: console games simply don't need the complex resilience built in that PC titles have to have, and which must take up a hefty proportion of development time.

But it seems as a community - and I know that in Britain at least this extends to many areas of life, if not all, and not just computer games - it takes us a New York minute to start whinging about something, and letters of complaint fly like confetti if something isn't perfect; but we're very slow and very grudging to extend praise. I put it down to the 'I know my rights' mentality that's become so prevalent, where we seem to think that freedom and democracy mean "I have the right to have everything I want the moment I want it, and anyone telling me I can't is a terrorist".

Sorry. I don't mean to start a political tirade here. But it does make me angry that there's such a disparity between our eagerness to jump on the negatives and our reluctance to acknowledge the positives. And yes, I know that's a complaint. Ironic, isn't it? ;)

I for one would love to see this situation reversed. Yes, there are faults with SH4, and with lots of other things. And yes, those faults should be reported - I'm not advocating a passive community that simply takes what it's given without comment, or with unreserved praise whether the product is bugged or not. And sometimes there are pieces of software (be they games or more serious apps) that really should never have seen the light of day. I know: I work on one in my office. But I'd really like to see some people taking a moment or two to think about what's involved in a project like this; to offer credit where it's due; to appreciate the work that's put in and the difficulties that developers face; and to be willing to see a flawed product as something other than a personal affront. Yes, games cost money, and yes, for your buck you should expect a working product - but the fact is we have a working product. If you're playing SH4 then I'm betting in more cases than not you're a long-time gamer. If that's true, then you should hopefully agree that the $50 (or local equivalent) that you forked out for SH4 wasn't a straight-out purchase of a sealed end product: it was an investment in something that hopefully is going to improve over time, just as SH3 did. After all, the price tag on SH3 when I bought it was £20. It's now almost a completely different game than it was, what with dev patches and community mods, and it still only cost me £20.

I'm going to stop ranting shortly. I'll just say in conclusion that, in general, people do what they do as best they can within the constraints of their own ability and their situation. Again, this applies as much to real-world life as it does to computer game development. I know that I work better when I think my efforts are appreciated; and I know that I'm less inclined to help someone who lays into me, calls me every name under the sun, and questions my parentage all because they're a bit upset that I haven't given them exactly what they want. I have to try to be professional, sure, but it's made a damn sight more difficult in the latter case. I don't think there're that many posts on here that go to those extremes - but there're a lot of people pouring a lot of negativity onto these boards, and I can't help but feel that the developers might be more encouraged to work harder for us, and to go on to produce more games for us, if they were offered a little more positive feedback - or at least if we could be a little less irate about the problems we bring to their attention.

Right, flame away...
