yeah, it was fun sneaking past the 5 or so destroyers defending the base, I was surprised I slipped in undetected. But the waves helped conceal my periscope, so that helped too.

bookworm_020 03-15-07 08:51 PM

I did a raid on Fremantle in Western Australia with my IX/D2 boat. After taking out the Bathurst Corvette that was patroling outside the harbour, I had free run of the place. The destroyers in the harbour were pinging me, and would shoot at the periscope if I left it up too long, but didn't move untill they moved to the bottom of the harbour.

Good fun had by me, but on the way home I got bombed by an aircraft, which wiped out half my crew, and then a destroyer was called in to finish me off!:damn:

At least I did damage to them before going down!!!:arrgh!:

Captain Norman 03-15-07 09:09 PM

hey, at least it was an honorable death.
For myself, if I make a dumb mistake I reload lol

If you are interested in attacking stationery targets in shallow water with the danger of mines, subnets and patrolling enemy warships, check out this before you set sail and it might just save your sub from destruction, (Or help it get blown up) :D

A jammed rudder and you are death ,and with this shallow waters british can jump to the water ,and tie your sub with a chain like a whale ,:rotfl:

the worse is the capture of u-boat technology in hands of allies inteligence. very easy in shallow waters.

My biggest surprise was sailing into a Green Nuetral Port in Norway going to dock and give the crew a little rest. Kristiansand looke like a nice nuetral port. Time Autum 1939 Nice sunny skys Not a war with Norway.
Here comes a Trawler to meet us. Relax we got a escort to the dock's.
to read the rest of story read my topic "Nuetral Ports" :rotfl: :rotfl:
A Long time ago When I got the first Silent Hunter 1 or 2? there was all ways 2 DD's Patroling the harbor. I would move in PD till I had a visual on the parked ships and the DD's on Patrol and turn my stern tube toward target set the torps to run slow speed Fire the Fish and I could be a long way heading out to sea before they hit the targets.:D :D DD's would never knew were they came from and would not try to find my boat.:D
Don't know if that woud work in SH3 but mit be fun to try.:D

It's is Big Red Button-syndrome. You know, always wanna push that BRB when seen - even that beside it reads DON'T PUSH!! :know:

So we have three seperate syndrom in this game:

Der Kanal-syndrom
Stay Out Shallow Water-syndrom
Stay Away Harbors-syndrom

BRB-syndrom we must ignore because we must push button to launch torpedoes, but other 3 syndromes... I'm working with 'em :D

Based on my last 11 patrols, I would disagree.

Hey, just curious, how much renown is an enemy sub worth? I don't see its value on the GWX renown sheet.

I actually got dispatched to the grid that contains Lerwick in my type IIA. So I naturally couldn't resist going into the harbor. I have found with the IIA to get any sort of cruising range out of it, you must go only about 5 knots for travel. That will take you to Shetland and back easily.

More by luck than anything I snuck into the harbor from the north. It was like 2 AM, with heavy fog and heavy precipitation. Those factors combined with a type II sub really make it the best possible conditions for a harbor attack I think.

I make it into the harbor, line up on a sub I can just barely see 1 km or so out, fire 3 torps in its direction, then head south silently. Thats a pretty poor plan with I think on it, being so close to the explosion in an enemy stronghold. I moved south and suddenly I'm taking damage. I stop, nothing around, except using the observation scope I notice a huge artificial sea wall there that I'm scraping into slightly. Must be a sub stopper construction.

I back up and go back out the north, killing a V&W destroyer (the only one in the harbor area at the time), and get away with 2 kills, some sub, and the destroyer. Pure luck really, with the perfect weather. Fun stuff!

went there in 39

easy

no nets or mines

only a dead t class and a barely alive s class, the s class somehow surfaced when it crashed against a wall.........ppretty cool

People don´t remember that the gunter prien raid was a very rare exception.
and the rule was stay away of ports and shallow waters.

if i donñt remember well it was the only harbour u-boat attack.

Kptlt. Siegmann 02-27-08 10:35 PM

Correct, Prien in U-47 conducted the only harbor raid of the war.

Grayson02sept1980 02-28-08 02:18 AM

was sent to the east US coast during operation "Paukenschlag" and was so bored I attacked Norfolk... sunk three DDs (yes they sat there like ducks... and if the ducks are out of the way you can get the geese ;) )
And 40kt if freighter and tankers...

So my way to do it is simply shoot the guards and the treasure is all yours...

Ok ok ok back then I had my WO do the Solution... today I might ba bit more... what's the word... I use it so rarely .... ah... yes.... "carefully"
:rotfl:

honestly... haven't tried any harbor raids other than norfolk and was astonished how "easy" it was with all the DDs sitting there.

Gezur(Arbeit) 02-28-08 04:12 AM

In reallife entering enemy harbors wouldnt be that easy as it is in sh even with GWX... there are many peaple in tor ports...that can spot your periscope, you cant dive, because the harbor isnt deep.....the DDs would ram you or shoot you...

And of course...reartubes are not life saving....normally DDs were not as dumb as they are in Sh3 they would zick-zack all the time......no chance for hitting them

I think in a nutshell that's why harbour raids are so popular. People get bored waiting for targets to come to them when patrolling on the open sea. So they go where they know ships are sitting ducks. It's like when Dillinger was asked why he robbed banks; "Because that's where the money is". Unfortunately the game doesn't punish such behavior enough to make it unrealistic to do so.
Tides, unknown currents, mines, and bad maps usually kept U-Boat captains well away from entering estuaries and harbours.

flakmonkey 02-28-08 07:49 AM

I had a great GWX moment while attacking the Lerwick sub base on my first GWX2 outing.

After having fired 10 torps at a single docked ship that still showed no signs of sinking despite every fish hitting perfectly, i gave up and turned around, about 2min later i heard the noise from many aircraft overhead, raising my observation periscope (carefully) i witnessed the whole harbour area getting a pounding from the luftwaffe, by the time the attack was over there wasnt a thing left floating.

It was just one of those moments when you really feel like your not the only one fighting the war:up:
