If a whale is do-able, how about a shrimp farting ? :D

Rubini 03-21-07 05:11 PM

Great idea to have whale sounds! I guess that we already think about this long time ago. But now with Ref's knowledge I'm sure that it is doable.
And I agree, isn't really necessary to have a 3d whale in game.

:yep:

:nope: :D

That's not what I would like.
It's the same hydrophone-sound, over and over again, with the same whale everytime...might just as well load it on the grammophone.
With whale-sound emitters actually being generated in the 3D-world, it would become allot more believable...certainly, if they're generated in predefined areas, and in random numbers (alone, or in groups/families, or just none at that moment) and species, travelling along scripted paths, pretty much like any kind of ship in SH3.

Imagine your SO: "Sir, we're in humpback-territories again...wanna have a listen?";)

Jim, you need to come up for air every once in awhile and take a break from trying to record shrimp farts. You've been down at 250 meters much too long mate. They must be cute but do we really need them? :rotfl:

Humping humpbacks would be much better, and louder too for us to hear. :yep:

That reminds me of U-534...

Oberbootsman Emil Häfner sees a splash close to the ship. "Alaaaarm! Shell impact 50 meters starboard!" Watch officer spins around at the shout and in the same moment a large whale appears in the surface. Phew, what a scare. The lone whale follows the sub lovingly for several days, making strong advances and rubbing against the hull's casing so the entire sub is shaking violently. Finally he gives up the cold, unapproachable maiden, makes a big blow with it's mighty tail and swims away....

(from the book: "U-534, the nazi submarine at Anholt" by Steen Johannsen)

They had a very long and rather interesting last patrol, but that's maybe for another thread...

Btw. re. dolphins... last night we went out of Bergen. Suddenly the Flottengeleiter in front of us starts what looked like strong evasive manoeuvres and I first thought if we were under air attack, when I realised he was evading some... dolphins?!! :rotfl: Either he's way to scared for this war or maybe just a very friendly and caring guy?

That may not be as "romantic" as the writer thought it was.
Whales have a skin that renews itself very fast, so their constantly losing old skin.
Whenever they get the chance to rub it off, they do so.
Sometimes, they visit certain shallow areas, to rub against the stoney sea-bottom...Beluga's are known to do that often.
Some scientists even think, that whales jump for the same reason (and not just for joy)...after a whale has made some large jumps, the sea is scattered with old skin parts.

I was just wondering where you are with this mod? :-?

Jimbuna 03-24-07 12:09 PM

Last I heard they were still fishing around :D

Who? Me? :rotfl:
It was just an idea...I wouldn't know how to create an invisible sub, behaving like a whale, and emitting random sounds, and in certain areas...or something like that?

I posted a little of what I know about whales, hoping that some better talented guy would jump on it.
It would make long patrols a little more adventureous, and the ocean more alive.

Any tiny object can be used as long as it's classed as a ship.
And sim file is done.
Attach the sound files and there you go!

heck I got a whale model as far as that goes.

I wonder if it's imported to the DLF.dat if it would move? :hmm:

Maybe I'll try it soon.

Anyone have some whale sounds?
:rotfl:

Alex 03-25-07 07:48 AM

I would like to have to try at it too, but did not find any sample of it, quite hard to find, indeed. :-?

Paajtor 03-25-07 10:32 AM

Check the 2 links in my 1st post.

Alex 03-25-07 10:58 AM

Hey Paajtor, thanks ! :D
Sorry to not have checked the first post
By the way, I have a weird question :o : is it possible to hear a whale sound "naturally" (simply if you're underwater, I mean, and then all the crew will be able to hear it.... I wonder if it's going to look real if you hear a whale sound on the ambiance_underwater sample ), or only with the hydrophone ?
Sorry to be a pain for you, I just want to know what's the sound I have to edit. ;)

By the way, considering I sweared I will not install/play SH4 as long as I've not done a complete GWX and Norops career, I can not take the original file(s) to edit it (them).... I would be thankful if you can upload them for me.

Paajtor 03-25-07 01:47 PM

If the whale will be an invisible object, classed as a ship, with the whale-species sound attached, then it will behave just like any other ship, regardless if you're inside the sub, hearing it through the hull closeby, or through the hydrophone further away.
For large whales, the sound should be louder than a ship, and sub-low sounds in particular travel very far.

But I don't know which sound-files to edit....guess it has to be 1 ambient file, 1 hydrophone-file, and 1 mixed file...all for the same "ship/whale-class".

I'm using GWX myself...which files do you need? :)
In the folder ...:\Program Files\SilentHunterIII\data\Sound, there are 3 sound-files for each ship.

Alex 03-25-07 02:30 PM

       ....
I was not thinking of creating a new unit, including its own sound....

The unmodded ambiance_underwater sound is only 8 seconds, same for ambiance_hydrophone, amb_SubmarineInterior is 12 seconds, what I can do is take those sounds, make them MUCH longer (like 10/15 minutes, or more) separately ;), and mix whale sounds with it. Then, there would be no need to create a new unit : we would not see whales, just hear them. So this is just an ear-candy.
What do you think of this idea ? :hmm:

edit

Sorry, no need to upload it, mate, I thought you want to have it for SH4, but it's for SH3, so no problem, I have it installed on my comp too. ;)

2nd edit

The only problem is that you'll have to enable/disable this mod before all missions depending on where is your patrol grid/ where you want to go : it would be kind of funny to hear blue whale sounds in the mediterranean (this animal lives essentially in the arctic/antarctic oceans).:rotfl:

Madox58 03-25-07 09:18 PM

I did the import of humpback model to DLF.dat
As I thought. it don't work!
:rotfl:
They had "Thingies" sticking out thier sides and flopping about!!!
:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
But the model looks good!!!

Uhm hate to inform you big guy but all male whales have those.

Madox58 03-25-07 09:35 PM

Out of the dorsal fins???

Paajtor 03-26-07 04:54 AM

That's why I would like "ear-candy" only, just like Alex said.

Alex 03-26-07 05:11 AM

Good news if you just want to hear whale sounds : no problem to create this, I'm going to do this work just for yourself, and I'll give you the d/l link soon (in a few days, probably). ;)
