Biggest thing about New "Store Bought" systems is they have SO MUCH crap

No, there are no such general restrictions.

There may be problems for applications that write data (especially to non-standard locations) or are permissions based, but I am not aware of any blanket exceptions.

Indeed, SH3Cmdr works happily on Vista, Likewise all my software. :smug:

FWIW though, I'll be waiting until at least SP1 before I install it on my primary-use computer. ;)

It's just going to take a little time for the kinks to get ironed out.
The only option you have,and it's a couple of hours work for new pc owners who want to play SH3 with mods is to re format back to XP during this period of time and your good to go.Re formatting is not a big deal really,just a little time consuming but the XP disc is pretty user friendly.
I had some real problems with SH3 in the beginning.Lost a really good DVD burner which had to be replaced because of you know what...Had to buy a new copy of SH and along the way got a lot of help from the community to get up and running again.
Because of my problem which was a little different, I ended up having to re format,but the end result was that I learned from this bad experience and it's all behind me now.
Getting a new rig next week.Already I'm backing up everything on disc but the kitchen sink and most certainly will have to re format but I've gotten through the learning curve and hopefully the problems I had will now be a thing of the past.

You'd best check deeper, there are restrictions. There are many things that are not Vista compatable... certain antivirus programs are only a part of what can be restricted. That's why there is a compatability check with an inplace upgrade.

Of course there are certain restrictions/limitations, but they are nowhere near as severe as your "If a piece of sofware hasn't been approved by Bill and Company, it won't run on Vista. So, I believe most all of your freeware is now useless." What you said is simply not correct, it´s far from the truth. There are tons of applications and games that work fine on Vista and that were not approved/certified by Microsoft. Some need to the updated, but that´s nothing special, we had the same situation when people moved from Win98 to 2000/XP or even just from XP SP1 to SP2.

This problem was caused by a compatibility issue between Windows Vista and this version of StarForce Protection driver. This program was created by StarForce Technologies.
An update is available that solves this problem.

Have you tried the driver update? Does it work?

The starforce site says it is vista compatable, but the update doesn't seem to solve any of my problems.

The game won't load b/c of starforce.

The SF removal tool doesn't seem to help.

I'm at a total loss. I've loaded and reloaded SH3 a few times now.

Ok. Here goes.

Start with a fresh install of SH3.

Install the SF driver removal patch, restart computer.

Install the new SF patch, restart computer.

SH3 works, but can't be patched. Something is wrong with my campaign file, so no patch, and no GWX.

What a long day.

mmm Not quite true, I got the upgrade disk since it was half the price as normal vista. It asks you for a XP disk to confirm you have it, BUT it also offers you the option of a full install, Hence I now have a Duel boot system with my old XP and New Vista so i can check games and drivers as it goes, at the mo not many probs and oh yes, Check my new post as i have discovered how to install SH3, patched to 1.4b and with Sh3 commander and GWX running, it looks and Runs great.
