It was one week before Christmas and we were ready to sail on our third war patrol.
We had the very nice words of onkal Karl ringing in are ears from the send off party the night before. Though we were going to miss Christmas at home we were itching to get the the enemy. Let losse are torpedos and get back home safe and sound. We sliped from the pier and set course of the canal. With the harbour patrol planes buzzing over head. http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/2088/gwxcar28ss1.jpg http://img389.imageshack.us/img389/5318/gwxcar29yj8.jpg As we aproched the first bridge we notice the were people wave us on are way so we replied in kind it was nice to know that we were doing a duty that made many proud. http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/959/gwxcar30kn8.jpg As soon as we hit the open sea after are safe transit through the canal. The weather turn very sour indeed a overcast sky rolled in and the wind picked up and after a day or so the the rain started to fall. It seemed we had started are run to are patrol grid in a nasty winter storm. http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/545/gwxcar31fy6.jpg We arrived on station at are patrol grid AM51 on Christmas day itself the weather was still very bad indeed. We try to stay submerged as much as possible as vissablity was down to under 300m for days. We patrol the grid without picking up a single contact which was very disshearting as we had great success in around the same area on are last patrol. We desided after a week of patrolling the grid to move on to the hunting grounds of the grid next door. We had been patrolling in grid AM52 for a few day when we picked up a contact on the hyderphone. We closed the target submerged as the contact was closing and the weather up top was hideous. We closed to within 500m and we could not see the target but as we closed further a small British merchant poped out of the heavy fog . We fired off to torps but one was dud but the other hit with a nice bang amidships. The weather was so bad that the one torpedo was enough to see her sink beaneath the waves. Yes at last we were off the mark on this cruise. http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/6830/gwxcar32xj6.jpg After the sinking we headed off back on are patrol course it was only 10 or so minutes latter when we heard a warship coming in fast. It did not alter course to are postion. It was very unluck as if it was a clear day we would have had a very good shooting postion on this bad boy. http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/8884/gwxcar33wj5.jpg Later that day we pick up several more contacts on the hyderphone. We were able to find three of the contacts and get into firing postion even though the weather was so bad. What was even more amazing was that we managed to send all three to the bottom. Even though we had yet another dud torpedo. http://img118.imageshack.us/img118/4251/gwxcar34lk2.jpg http://img118.imageshack.us/img118/7379/gwxcar35kv8.jpg http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/6453/gwxcar36ow7.jpg 3 days after sinking those 4 small merchants in the one day the weather final started to break and we could at last do some patroling on the surface without the risk of getting lost overboard. We were ploughing along nicely when the lookout shouted that he had spotted smoke so we put the enigines full ahead and of we went to investigate. It turned out to be a tramp steamer as the weather had got better I called for the gun to be mad ready and the deck gun crew to do there worst to the steamer. It was not long before the steamer was sinking to the bottom. We were soon back on course. This was turning into a good patrol even though the weather had not been too good up to know. http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/8553/gwxcar37rc7.jpg http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/854/gwxcar38gq0.jpg |
Very good mate! Just want you to know one thing:
(edited 'cause I'm a rude bastard:damn: :damn: :down:) |
It only took another day for us to run into are next victim which was yet another steamer. Again it was time to call apon the deck gun crew it did not take them long to brake the back of the steamer.
http://img360.imageshack.us/img360/1813/gwxcar39mb0.jpg http://img360.imageshack.us/img360/7669/gwxcar40kb0.jpg Then on the 10th of Jan the weather took a turn back towards the bad again as a major storm rolled in. It was not all bad as we picked up another contact on the hyderphones, we close on the contact and it turned out to be a big ammo ship bound for the UK. We moved into a good firing postion and waited for the big ship to come into view we fired 2 torpedos at her one hit the other was a dud. As fast as we could we set up for another shot this time it went staright and normal and hit her right in the bow and up she went with a massive expolsion that could be felt through out the boat. Later on that night we came across and other contact and moved into fire only that when the ship cam into view we saw it was a neutral!!!! What a waste of time. http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/6703/gwxcar45an2.jpg http://img300.imageshack.us/img300/6294/gwxcar47nq0.jpg For the next 12 days not a thing was possible to bring the war to the enemy on are patch of sea as the mother of all storms pounded the living hell out all that lived on the sea. We spent most of are time submerged only coming up to vent the boat and charge batts On the early morning of the 22nd the weather final got better and as no surpise as the weather got better so did are luck we picked up smoke on the horizon and off we went to see what was the course of the smoke it turned out to be a large merchant as we had no torpedos left it was left to the trusty gun crew to dispatch the big vessel to the bottom it took them a while but they got the job done. Late on the same day we came across another ship this time a small merchant yet again it was the deck gun crew that done the job, they were earning there pay yet again. http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/2070/gwxcar48sm1.jpg http://img119.imageshack.us/img119/5532/gwxcar49fc2.jpg http://img164.imageshack.us/img164/497/gwxcar50zs0.jpg http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/8393/gwxcar52ap9.jpg http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/5955/gwxcar53ax5.jpg |
For the next five days the was only one day when we did not come across a ship that we did not sink we could not belive the were so many targets that emeny were not protecting if only we had more boats.
http://img73.imageshack.us/img73/4568/gwxcar54yy7.jpg http://img73.imageshack.us/img73/3575/gwxcar55hy8.jpg http://img481.imageshack.us/img481/7789/gwxcar56zs0.jpg http://img73.imageshack.us/img73/3075/gwxcar57va8.jpg http://img481.imageshack.us/img481/7230/gwxcar58zc4.jpg http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/1296/gwxcar59zo3.jpg http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/2598/gwxcar60nv8.jpg http://img240.imageshack.us/img240/4334/gwxcar61nk2.jpg Then after informing BDU of are unbelievable haul it was time to set course for home and it was not before time everyone was champing at the bit to get back home and tell everyone there stories of war in the atlantic. http://img240.imageshack.us/img240/8787/gwxcar62sp2.jpg Just over a week after sinking are last ship we were slipping in the harbour at Kiel. We noticed that the hipper had join the blucher since we had been away somethimg big was going to happen we all thought. It was lat at night when we got back so it was not till the following morning that I was told that I had recived the iron cross second class. http://img75.imageshack.us/img75/6809/gwxcar63ew2.jpg 16 Dec 1939 10:14 Patrol 3 U-49, U-Flotilla Wegener Left at: December 16, 1939, 10:14 From: Kiel Mission Orders: Patrol grid AM 51 04 Jan 1940 02:58 AM 52 Ship sunk! Mr Chris:
How did you place the markers on the nav map with your own text, as in the below screenie http://img240.imageshack.us/img240/8787/gwxcar62sp2.jpg Would be very handy to know how you do that! Cheers Johnno |

The marking and text on the map look like the work of SH3 generator to me. A top bolt on mod, try it! Lots of itop intel and so far as I am aware compatable with all other SH3 Mods. Lots of sunken ships, in the same area, I'd say convoy. |
@Johnno74,
Hakahura is right SH3 Gen is the program that puts all the intel on the nav map. It is a great tool and i never leave base without it. As for all the sunken ship icons in the same area it was not a convoy but lots of single ships that i picked up. It is my favorite hunting ground at the start of the war. I always make sure i use all means to sink anything i come across. You try that patrol area in the early war period and see what you find.:up: I have another update to add soon as i just got back from patrol number 4 and it was a very good patrol indeed.:arrgh!: |
Once again all were present and correct and all stores and munitions were loaded and U49 was ready to depart on its 4th war patrol. It had only been 19 day since we had dock at the same pier coming back from our last patrol. But the fast turn around was due to the great hunting ground we had found N/W of Ireland. We had become a victim of are own success. We set off with out much fanfare due to the timing of are sailing. We push off and set a course down the Kiel Canal and out into the the open water of the Nordsee.
http://img168.imageshack.us/img168/473/gwxcar64fl6.jpg http://img154.imageshack.us/img154/2825/gwxcar65eo2.jpg http://img154.imageshack.us/img154/3999/gwxcar66nn5.jpg http://img154.imageshack.us/img154/1930/gwxcar67ey7.jpg Once we made it to open water we conducted the normal drill to prepare are selves for every eventuality. The weather was clam and we started to make good speed to are hunting grounds. Till we started to round the top of Scotland north of Lerwick we ran into foul weather. We had been travelling along in the storm front for a few day when we on of the lookouts spotted some smoke on the horizon and we move into investigate it turned out to be a heavily defended taskforce which from what we could make out was made up of 3 BB 2 Cruisers and a about 6 DD’s. We moved into to see if we could get a hit on one of the capital ships we fired a spread at a Nelson class BB but just after we had fired the force changed course think that we might have been detected we went deep and went to silent running. We stayed down till the Taskforce had passed. Well we had wasted 4 torpedoes but it was too much of a target to not try and shot at. As I said to the crew we will have better luck next time. http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/827/gwxcar68aj6.jpg The Very next day the weather got better if only it had been better the day before and we might have sunk that BB. But alas we used the weather as best we could and made good speed once again to the hunting grounds of AM52, 54, 53. http://img144.imageshack.us/img144/1965/gwxcar69ob7.jpg On the late night of the 8th of March the Hydrophone operator picked up a funny contact moving away at medium speed. We surface at once and ran off in pursiut at top speed. In the early hours of the 9th the lookout spotted a sail in the distance. Well we had run this far at top speed for a bloody sloop!!!! Well we were not impressed at all well I sent the deck gun crew to work and after a couple of shells the sloop was fire wood. http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/1756/gwxcar70js3.jpg Well we turned back to the hunting grounds and started to patrol in search of great targets than a sloop. http://img144.imageshack.us/img144/7974/gwxcar71tg5.jpg We saw nothing for 2 days then the weather took a turn for the worse again and we were surprised by a enemy plane we just managed to get out of the way for it we will be paying much more attention to the sky in future. http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/4405/gwxcar72ss8.jpg The bad weather had been with us for a day when we picked up a sound contact we moved in to see what it was. We found a coastal tanker which we sent to the bottom with a torpedo to amidships. In the early morning of the 9th we spotted a large cargo trying to make her way to England we closed up on her in the lighting sky and put 3 torpedoes into her and she went to the bottom with her precious cargo. http://img144.imageshack.us/img144/5751/gwxcar73fc0.jpg http://img144.imageshack.us/img144/3120/gwxcar74gg6.jpg |
How he sunks so many ships?
Well the Uboot that he have is a VII class, and have 14 torps on board, plus he use allot of his deckgun....
If you're a good aimer, can use 1 torp a ship(1 shot 1 kill)... for deckgun it's a question when the weather is good, thats 70% bad weather and 30% good weather in GWX... I use the deckgun allot(when the weather is perfect) and if there is a ship nearby... Torps i use for bigger fish... For me i use 2 torps a ship, and wait patience when the ship go down... With deckgun average 30 a 40 rounds a ship...(if it's a big ship, i shoot), if small i let the crew shoot... |
