Task forces are always fun....when you can find em!
|
I think my most remarkable task force encounter was when I sank a Nelson at night from about 6km away, with magnetic fuse (with steam torps I might add). I fired a four torpedo spread, one of them detonated prematurely about 1km away from the boat, one detonated prematurely in visual range of the task force, yet no reaction from them. the last 2 remaining fish hit the Nelson, one just behind the fore deck, which caused a huge secondary explosion, I guess I hit the ammo bunkers with that, the second eel hit scews and rudder. Needless to say that the escorts couldn't find me, and after the hit in the ammo bunker, the Nelson was going down quickly.

Ive never had any luck with task forces my current career (i play DiD) is on his 12th patrol in U-64 (a IXb) but my 11th patrol was almost my last when i ran into a task force just west of ireland - i worked out their course and went to flank to get in position - once in position I gleefully noticed it was a 3 Battleship Taskforce - all 3 Nelsons - escorted by 2 fiji Cruisers and 3 hunt destroyers - i set up for the lead Nelson and fired 2 Electric Eels aiming for her smoke stack - i then reset up quickly and fired 2 Steam torps set to fast for the second Nelson aiming just infront of the Smoke stacks.
There i was watching the timer and "Torpedo impact sir" - the 2 steam torps smacked stright into one of the fiji cruisers who in a valient attmept to save the nelson threw herself into the path. because of this the first nelson slowed down and the Electric eels impacted with her way off the engine room which caused a nasty list but not enough to slow her - the fiji sunk like a rock, not that i noticed since the Destroyers were after me and i was forced to crash dive but to no avail - 2 of the destroyers made sucessful DC attacks to my engine rooms causeing massive damage and flooding - panicing i put most the crew to control the flooding. Lukily the DC's didnt damage my hull integrity as i sank to 290m before i was able to get the flooding under control and surface. The Task force was long gone and i had to limp home at 2 knots with severe unrepairable Engine damage. |

That was my finest SH3 moment, sinking the Rodney. Even better than sinking the lame passenger liner in NY harbor. That was no challenge. Sinking that big SOB and getting away unscathed was pure joy. :D
It was exactly as my signature says ;) |
I snuck into Scapa last night and sunk the Nelson so that must account for all of them.:rotfl:
