what kind of format does the music need to be in to play in the grammaphone?

They have to be either .ogg or mp3 format. I like the gramaphone packs since they're older songs that sound like they're being played on an old record player..

Stick with the OggVorbis format....mp3 can give you CTD's in SH3.

Yes, that's the best thing to do.
It will take quite a while, though, and will put a big strain on your CPU. But it's worth the effort. I have an AMD XP3200+, and it took around 20mins for 150 mp3's, to convert to OGG. |

I used the PAK Audio Converter (Freeware) from ZDNet.com to convert OGG to MP3. It worked well and handles batch processing.
