What does FT stand for?

Using the Ekelund range formula and the basic range formula (Range=relative speed across the LOS/Bearing rate) along with a speed computed from the Demon display can give you a dead nuts course. All you need is a tool used by pilots to calculate crosswinds and the ability to count. It seems like a pretty long process when it's explained, but after you do it twice you have it, and it takes about 30 seconds from then on. I won't post it today, but maybe it'll come out later...who knows when I might feel ambitious?
This sounds like a good trick. I'd love to hear about it some time. Listening to you talk about it, I think I kind of have an idea how it works, but I'd like to hear it straight from the horse's mouth. :-)

The only thing missing in DW TMA is range rate tracking. THAT would spice things up a bit, but it's just not a part of the game (yet). Maybe someday...
Doppler?

FT stands for Fire Control Technician...

http://www.chinfo.navy.mil/navpalib/ratings/ft-rate.gif

Fire Control Technician (FT): FTs maintain the electronic equipment used in submarine weapons systems. FTs are responsible for the operation, routine care and repair of the complex electronic, electrical and mechanical equipment required to ensure the accuracy of Navy guided-missile systems and underwater weapons. A six-year enlistment is required.

FT's own the electrical side of the weapons system, as well as the weapons themselves. In US subs the Combat Control System is where all of the inputs from the periscopes, sonar, radar, radio, etc. come together and the data is interpreted. The FTs job is to interpret that data.

We are also the enlisted experts in weapons employment and tactics. Think of us as a combination of the TMA and Fire Control autocrewmen in DW.

Just for the record, about half the crap that "jonesy" did in HfRO would have been done by an FT.

It was a joke. They wouldn't know what to do with me in the Navy. I'd last about an afternoon.

We all know that "Jonesy" didn't do anything but listen to classical music. :rotfl:

EDIT: I'm going to have to watch HFRO again and pay extra close attention to what he really did do.

What to think !! I paraphrase an earlier post -'' They (we) are a very bright bunch here !'' :P :o  :stare:

Say that in the UK - people would laugh - In Ireland they would ask if you had been drinking !! :-j

He was sup, broadband, class, narrowband, and FTOW...for the entire patrol. No sleep, no recreation (aside from Bach). He was the most UN-sonar tech like sonar tech I ever saw. They should have shown him running to the showers during watch a few times, now THAT would be reality.
