I'm confused what happened to the link i posted...why do i need to be careful? :-?

Well... I'm glad you asked.

The whole area of "abandonware" is a grey one at best. Many people confuse the term "abandonware" with public domaine. Abandonware is simply software that is no longer supported by the original publishers (a lot of whom no longer exist). But... that does not mean that it is legal to put it up on a website for free download.

Several of the titles on all three of the sites still exist under copyrite, so they could not be considered as available in the public domaine.

As this site has a long standing policy against the illegal downloading of software AND could be liable for post links to downlads I made the decision to edit the links.

J.C.,

Okay, I knew those rules from the FAQ, but I wasn't aware of that sites that offer so-called abandonware in public and on "official" websites eventually may have a legality issue. Sorry if I touched a sensitive issue.

I'm glad to report that the two that I listed, DM Java and Empire DL,are confirmed to be free and legal downloads on their dedicated websites, while Speedball2 has been bought on CD via ebay.

I remember burning through all of SSI's "General" games. Panzer General, Allied General, Fantasy General, and Star General. Not the most realistic operational games ever devised (hated the way planes hung in the air) but at the time the SVGA graphics were the crispest I'd ever seen.

Actually, Fantasy General was one of the better games of that genre at the time. Star General....well...was probably one General game too many.
