Indian navy is big but is not very modern (comparison to west) but they are fairly well trained thier submarieeners are trained by both russian and british.
Indian Navy is big but not as big as a western Navy. I agree with you on that point. But I must say that Indian Navy is on a modernisation programme. It has a 30 year plan for submarine building. It is purchasing Scropene subs and when you tell me about the training let me remind you that Indian submariners are currently training South African Submariners. Indian Navy interact with foreign Navies like USN, UK, French, Singapore, Russia, China etc and had naval exercise with them.

Very true, It will take some time for us to build a very modern sub force. For that purpose is the 30 year sub building programme called the Project 75. They plan to make the scorpene subs with French assistance and then after getting the amurs with Brahmos capability an Indian made sub which have the capabilities of the scorpenes and the amur.

The 209 and the Kilos are undergoing upgrades.

No official word about the akulas.

From russia two akulas Rys and Kugar will be on thier way this year to next year.

also India is looking to copy designs so they can build thier own nuclear submarine based on the russian Charlie class SSGN

According to Indian Navy sources, some 265 personnel, mostly from Vishakapatnam, were trained in Sosnovy Bor, west of St. Petersburg, for service onboard two Akula-class submarines (referred to as the Bars class in Russia) that India is negotiating to lease from Russia. Officially, Russia has yet to sign an agreement for the lease of two submarines, but the training of Indian Navy personnel suggests that such a deal between India and Russia has already been struck, the sources said, adding that India is also paying for the completion of two additional Akula-class submarines in Russia.

Kapitain, as you mentioned Indian Navy personnel has undergone nuclear submarine training in Russia.

Kapitan 02-07-06 09:16 AM

I know, i also have my own personal sources that state that india has already signed russia also, the fact the two subs are heading for the pacific either on way or soon give us a big clue.

India has had nuclear submarines before and also they are attempting to build thier own.
