I posted a little thread there. I know I said I would not but I think it needed a little post. I'm the A. J. Rimmer fellow. Hopefully it’ll clear up some of the misconceptions the steam forum dwellers have about Dangerous Waters.

For those in awe of the Akula II model in the movie... :)

That is the stock Gepard. The other Akula II, the Vepr, uses the standard Akula I model.

And I don't think we can post to their forum...

Jamie, why don't you b*tch at them about putting up some links?

Valve is like a whole other planet... think 13-17.... :dead:

Edit: I just got my activation. :)

I've been suitably evangelical at a couple of places. People are definitely talking about DW already, just from Steam's news splash.

Three14 01-26-06 06:28 AM

I'm reading a thread now and it looks like the trailer (which is good for the DW graphics engine, but maybe a bit tame for the Half-Life 2 players dominating Steam) has caused some confusion about the gameplay style.

People are definitely thinking about it, though. Just not clear about what it is that they're getting.

This is a huge opportunity to help those out that are willing to try something new.

Pareto applies. You can immediately rule out 80% of Valve's fanbase as disiterested/never will be interested, but the remainder will be and it's really up to the fanbase to actualise that.

That's why we should tell them... ;)

I've posted the FAQ over at the Steam Forum as well. Going to post a link to the interview too ... hope that helps in clearing some questions right of the bat.

A link to SUBSIM should be put there...

Had a look on the Steam DW forum and it seems most of the questions are coming from kids who like FPS games and think anything on Steam must be a valve game and don't know diddly squat.

Hopefully they'll go away and leave the smart people.

Aye, there will be a lot of kids who don’t understand what’s going on and what this Dangerous Waters is about. Already I’ve seen opinionated people posting false facts. It’s up to us to jump on there and reinforce facts and generally make it easy and friendly place to find the information on this game so people who would be generally interested can get an idea about what it’s about. I think we’re doing a good job though. OneShot is doing a nice job on the FAQ.

I think it might be a good idea to put up some guides to playing the demo that cater to people who might not know much about modern naval combat. After all we all started somewhere. Some basic instructions on how to fly/drive the platforms and what to do with them.

Maybe this would be a good time to organise some really basic online lessons. I'd be willing to help.

Fandango 01-26-06 10:22 AM

Mhm...it's not a game...it's a SIM... :-?

Winston 01-26-06 10:42 AM

Yes indeed, a simulation. I do know that. Thanks for pointing that out the misclassification perpetrated in the hast of the post and shouting the word ‘SIM’ at me. I am indeed, a silly billy.

Three14 01-26-06 11:33 AM

Dang, I still haven't received my activation email!

I was thinking of posting a link to Chapter 8...Principles of Underwater Sound as sort of a discriminator (if you think a game might make you want to read this, then...), but I can't post yet. Even then, it may not be a good idea scaring off the med-core fans!

Telling isn't really that clear. What else is like DW? Also, I don't think the demo does good job of promoting the game to not-vets of the series; I wonder if people will be able to imagine how playing the other platforms would be. The Kilo just ain't fun to start with.
