From the manual for my machine
"2. Set the start position to EHZ, the first trigram of the message 3. In this position, decode the second trigram TBS to retrieve the message-key. This should result in XWB 4. Set the decoded message-key (XWB) as start position on the machine. 5. Now decode the rest of the message..." Basically it's a decode within a code. You set the start as EHZ, type in TBS to get XWB and then use that as the start for the rest of the message |
So when the Captain in Das Boot mentioned a triple-encrypted message, he had a further trigram to do?

Set the start to EZH and then type TUP which should decipher as YPD Now set the start to YPD and type in the message. Triple encoded...hmmmm....I guess that would be 3 Trigrams instead of two....Gonna give one of those a try in the next post. |

Enigma
Sehr Geehrt!
I have been investigating using Enigma for a while now and thought the following may be of interest. The first site below is a source of much information, with pics, from Bletchley Park. You will need to browse through the various parts of this extensive site. The other site is by a dedicated Enigma fan in Holland, who is also very helpful with advice. I cannot recommend him highly enough. It is, to me at least, the best Enigma simulator with a simple set of instructions. He also provides a source of codes, BUT, whenever you generate a set of codes for a particular month it will be different from any other set generated for that same month. Thus people who want to use the sim must generate one set of codes then pass them on to all users. If any of you guys would like to contact me at off site at <hmsironduke@ozemail.com.au> (it's easier for attachments), please feel free. I have a been working on creating forms to use with Enigma based on originals, as well as a manual based on the original German one. Just for interest I also have a continuous A4 template for KTB's in Word. http://www.codesandciphers.org.uk/ http://users.telenet.be/d.rijmenants/en/enigmasim.htm Hope this helps! Mit kameradschaftlichen Grüßen Kapitänleutnant Wilhelm Weiß |
