Another good read is "The Cruel Sea" by Nicholas Monsarrat (also made into a great film about 40 years ago). He served in convoy escorts and the B/W photography in the movie really caught the cold grey Atlantic - v atmospheric. His intro was for U-Boat 997, by Heinz Schaefer, also a great non-fiction book. Another I like is Donald MacIntyre's U-Boat Killer. Neither of those has the great suspense of a well-written piece of fiction, but both are about true events.

Bit modern (and some of the purists here may say a bit trashy) but I like Patrick Robinsons books, especially Nimitz Class. Fair bit of submarine action in there too.

"Night of the Uboats" by Lund and Lundlam..

Its the story about convoy SC7-which we know was one of the most costly sea battles involving convoys. I believe 20 ships went down from the convoy, and 2 uboats.. I JUST got it in the mail today and cannot wait to read it..

Its from the perspectives of the escorts i believe...
