Iron Coffins is a great Book. gives you a good insight of how it really was from 1941 on....also U-Boat War by Buchheim, Not a great read but has some great Pics! Just Finishied Silent Hunters by Theodare P. Savas. Wasnt that impressed but had some facts I didnt know about some of the commanders. :-? The U-boat commanders handbook is on my x-mas list, (as it is cheap on Amazon and the wife said that the kids could afford it.) So I have to wait. :damn:

I recommend getting Lawrence Paterson's U-Boat War Patrol. Amazingly detailed book about on of 'Teddy' Suhren's patrols in U564.

Try a search at Abebooks.com for ISBN number: 0939631210
The U.S. Retail price is $8.95 Just looked a moment ago and there were three available at this price. Abebooks.com is also a fantastic source for books in general; especially if you're looking for something that is no longer in print. Basically, it's a search engine for all of the book stores that list their inventory with them. I almost ALWAYS look here before buying elsewhere, then compare what I find with the same on Ebay. Saves lots of money this way. Good luck! |

Of course, Iron Coffins is the book to get if you wish to experience the gritty life and times of a U-boat commander. |
I read both Iron coffins and Das Boot and I must say, I found out more about life on board a u-boat from Das Boot.
Even though I know it's a novel, Buchheim wrote it based on what he saw on real u-boats. |
