the hooks were mainly for retreaving sub nets after they were pulled loose.
they were indeed used to "fish" for subs but with no real results since they damaged the ship far more than the sub if and when they did manage to snag anything and all the snags on the bottom meant they had to troll high in the water to prevent snagging the bottom, so the hooks were about as usefull as ice in alaska. |

there is a story/report that during wwi of a man seeing a submarine, taking out a rowboat,, snagging the sub, then dropping hand grenades on it until it surfaced.

The British used grapling hooks, among other means before depth charges were invented, during the First World War to snag German UBoats. See Lowell Thomas' Raiders of the Deep.
