I seem to never get hit at 30-feet i dont know why but, they either set charges to periscope or around 50 feet or deeper but never 30. once i had 2 destoryers after me, i stayed at 30 at slow-speed and went to external view and watch where they dropped them, always above or below but never on target i was always allowed to slip away  Dont know if this is a bug or thats how they did it back then.

Sitting dead still & quiet in SH3 will get you just dead. You have
to keep changing, up & down, right & left, slow & fast. Make
sure when they have you and drop DC's, you are long gone.
Being deep lets you get farther away before the charges go off.
Dead still translates into a dead duck....

PS. As for the 30 meter thing, maybe you can get away with it
early in the war but its gonna kill you when you least expect it.
Assumption is the mother of all screw-ups !!!

If you have BOLD, launch one, change course and go deeper when you are getting pinged. I have tried this tactic in 43-44 and it works. But don`t go above 2/3 speed, they will hear you at once.
Another great thing about this game, BOLD actually works if you use it the right way.

as soon as they start pinging you, forget about standing still.. as soon as the waves hit the body of the sub, they know exactly where you are and are rushing there to drop da bombs.

FAdmiral, will the PA team be doing a Pacific Aces for SH3 :D I played SH2 PA to death. loved it! imagine the US subs in SH3 they are way larger so the beauty of them would be mind boggling  [/b]

Not likely, the models of the ships are such that there is no way
now to create new ones in SH3 like we did in SH2. Unless the
code was released (even less likely), we will have to wait & see
if there is a SH4 and what kind of theatre the game will occupy.

One other thing:
If you activate your observation scope ("O"), extend it just a little, and set it to look up straight (you cannot do that with your attack scope), you can see where the destroyer is above you. The moment he is right above you, you can go to flank speed for a short time, he wont hear you. You also see how he is approaching -> change your heading so that it is right angles to him.

Normally, the rule is: the deeper you are, the safer. In the early war years, they cannot find you at maximum depth. Later they can (and like to bomb that depth) so be careful. Even later, with the Type XXI, go to 230+ meters, and all will be well.

Here's a really noob question, bet here it goes:

If the Enemy is using active sonar and chases you around, and you don't have any BOLD to distract them with, what can you do? Hope that they eventually go tired and return to the convoy?

A few minuts ago I played the Gibraltar single mission in my type IX sub in 1942, and after sending the carrier 4 torpedoes the 5 destroyers were right on top of me, firing hedgehogs and DC on me, trying to blow me to hell....

I managed to evade them several times but after 10 minutes they scored a good hit when 2 destroyers made their move from two aproching angles.....It seems like they got the entire weapons arsenal for the destroyer force in the Atlantic.....Does anybody knows if they ever run out of ammo....I noticed that at least one or two sat still on the surface not beeing in the fight...is it posible that they had run out of ammo ?

That might work! But, just remember that their sonar is not perfect, so it is still possible to slip away (eventually) even when it seems hopeless.
I'd recommend just going deep, slow, and silent. Change course occasionally if it seems prudent.
Speed up in short bursts to avoid depth charges (the extra noise you make will be masked by the explosions).
Of course, sometimes, there will be no escape!

When against multiple DD's, your chances of survival are very
dimished, especiall in the later years. If you must try to sink
a high-pro target protected by many DD's, make sure the water
is very deep in every direction. if not, forget it if you want to live.

From what I understand, it is possible for the escorts to run out of depth charges. No idea how long this takes though. I wouldn't want to sit around though to find out. :gulp:

FWIW, I have heard "cavitation" noises in my sub while drifting at periscope depth. Not sure if they are erroneous program noises that only I can hear, or if they reflect some flex in the sub at such a shallow depth due to heavy surface seas (it was choppy upstairs, but not raining). No destroyer homed in on me, but I was well away from the convoy when it happened so I don't know if they could hear it or not. Won't make a difference if you are being actively pinged, but might if a destroyer is drifting nearby while you try to slip by.
