Not entirely true. During Surface Attacks it was the exec, but during submerged attacks the captain peered through the scope to acquire the data. He called out the speed, bearing, range, and angle on the bow. All himself. You simulate this calling out of data by hitting the check mark in the game.

In the game I always do the surface attacks myself also to allow for the "human error effect".

91%

I play RUB 1.42 with SH3Comm 1.43; the suggestion in the readme is to have the map updates activated.

I also have the external camera as I do enjoy watching my boat sail and admiring the ship emblem, etc. Would gladly give it up if I could just keep the ship camera, but one needs one for the other.

Never use the ship camera during DC attacks and duels with warships; plays much better that way. :arrgh!:

I always play on 93% with RUB.

To be honest did the captain have to do all the calculations?

I use my weapon officer... that his his job after all :)

and if he misses i can cal him names and slap him :P

I have been playing with 81% I think. Just started with manual targetting and really enjoy it. Also dissabled the opportunity contacts in the contacts config because it got the point where I was saying "oh for $%# sake another one" lol.

At the moment I have the external cam, stabalize view and the weapon office turned on. Although I dont use the weapon officer sinces its really 1 extra click from auto targeting so I didn't see the point. I use stabalize view to get the hang of how the manual targetting works and to help figure out methoods for attacks. I'm thinking about dissabling it soon along with the camera. I only use the weapon officer at night on the surface as I cant see anything but I prolly shouldnt even be attacking then either. Its hard to tell with my monitor since its so dark. I have to run 3.40 something gamma on my video card just to see my desktop. Pretty brutal.

Also whats everyones views on using the watch officer for getting ranges? I tend to use him for plotting contacts courses since I'm too far for the usual methood?

I play at 100%, but there's one thing I suggest anyone do (as mentioned in an earlier post), turn off the opportunity contacts! The game feels much more realistic and I spend a lot more time actually having to search rather than simply waiting for the next red square to show up on my map. I keep the convoy and task force contacts on, since those would have been radioed to you. But turning off the opportunity contacts is the single most realistic thing I think I've done.

I sure don't. :o If I had once been a U-Boat skipper and knew how to manually collect data and work out a solution, then I would...

But I wasn't, and I don't so I leave those two realism options off. I can't remember the exact % of my realism. It's probably around 70%.

Yes he did on submerged attacks. Take a couple of scenes from das Boot. In one scene the boat is surprised by a Destroyer. The Captain goes to Periscope depth and while peering through the scope calls out by himself and with no help: speed, angle on the bow, bearing, and range.

In another scene, the surface attack, it is the First Watch Officer who looks through the UZO to call out all of the data.

Once the data was called out it would be inputted into the TDC by other crewman. You simulate calling out the data to your TDC operator by clicking the check symbol.

If you don't like a movie for a source the same can be found in the following books:

Iron Coffins
U-Boat Commander
Steel Boats Iron Hearts
Wolf
U-Boats by David Miller
Another Place Another Time

and the list goes on!

I play at 92%.. i love the graphics but I try not to use them to "cheat" if you will.... i jsut can't help it sometimes

elcid 07-31-05 11:42 PM

hey, my avatar's changes and ... OMG I've gotten older!!

Calathea 08-01-05 05:15 AM

Well i guess i am a cheater in that i use the Officers to do their job, and have edited the config files so that i dont get a hit in reknown for doing the job of Captain.

sgtabell 08-01-05 12:38 PM

I have never played at anything but 100%, except for two times where I played missions for 5 minutes a piece to see what I looked like with a periscope out of the water. I have not watched with the camera...I consider it something which I will do on the next campaign,....as I am going to create a journal of sorts with pictures for entertainment of self and friends.

I've played with 100% "realism" on several ocasions, but I find it more fun with the "event camera" turned on... although it does have the potential for cheating, I like to see things blow up to much to let it go :D

As of late I'm fooling around with the Idea of turning on the weapons officer and have him do his job, since I don't consider that as "unreal", but I don't know if that will hurt my renown too much.

Letum 01-27-06 07:12 PM

The problem with the WO is that he is instant and accurate. With WO help all you must do is stick up your periscope for less than 2 seconds and fire away and if the fish run well than your gaurented a hit. Without WO help you have to track the convoy/ship, prepare to attack it and observe it before the attack.
So whilst it is unrealistic not to have a WO helping you, the SHIII WO is even more unrealistic.
Thats why I dont use him.

THE_MASK 01-27-06 08:25 PM

I am determined to play only on 100% realism now . Unfortunately if i was really in WW2 kreigsmarine i would probably have been fired out of the torpedo tube by now .
