Hello all,

An old salt saying "ahoy" again after several years away from the game. A lot of water has flowed under the bridge of my life, including nearly dying and being in a coma for three days, but I pulled through and in spite of all the new games, and hardware on which to play them, I have yet to find a sim or game that has the atmosphere and immersion, no pun intended, that this game does.

The last version of the game I played was Living Silent Hunter, so I am checking into the forum to take a look around and see what new mods and such have been developed. I am also hoping I will be able to get the game to play again on my old ASUS G73J notebook gaming PC, that back in its day was quite the smoker. I have since upgraded the OS from W7 Home 64 bit to W10. I have a lot of catching up and tinkering ahead of me.

Anyhow, just wanted to extend the courtesy of saying hello before I start posting again. And to say, what a pleasure it is to find this game and this community still going strong.

I've had a quick look around the forum and found that the LSH mod has been updated to a 2015 version; the last version I played was the 2010 version and it ran fine on my old ASUS notebook. My notebook has 8 GB of RAM and 1 GB of video RAM, which was a very good setup when it was new.

I see that LSH 2015 is recommending 2 GB of video RAM. Looks like I shall be shopping for a new computer if I wish to run the new version. And I do wish to run the new version. My wife is not going to like hearing this....

If there are any current players of LSH 2015 I would appreciate hearing your comments about game play with this supermod. Do you think it is worth it for me to splash out money for a new, more powerful PC in order to run LSH15?

Can't help answer your LSH questions, but welcome back. Especially after your experiences.

8 GB of RAM and 1GB of video RAM should be enough to play any mods and supermod out there . Yes, maybe you will not have 60+ FPS when sailing in and out of the port area but that's like 0,01 % of the total time we spend on a patrol .

Also, welcome back :Kaleun_Salute:

Thank you for the replies, gentlemen.

Yes, I should think my system meets requirements, and did in the past run LSH 2010, GWX and such very well.

As stated, the harbour experience is such a small part of the game and is thus not that important to me. I was merely flabbergasted to see that LSH 2015 says to have 2 GB of video RAM, not just for port scenes but also for at sea.

As my old notebook is giving me issues again with overheating, I was out today at my shop getting a quote for a new gaming desktop with a larger monitor. I have enjoyed my notebook gaming time, but I believe a proper desktop will not give me overheaying issues. Even with two internal cooling fans the notebook still gets toasty and then unstable. I've had seven years out of it and it will still soldier on for a few more I should think, but my games are pushing it too hard.

Hi Randy
Always good to hear from you my friend.
Hopefully there should be a new version of LSH3 out next year which will be the final version from the team.

I do highly recommend SH4 v1.5 Fifi's OM+OMEGU Compilation covering the German campaigns.
Much improved graphics on SH3.

I've come back to sh3

Yeah on a similar theme. I've started playing it again in the last week on a simple budget laptop (celeron n4000, 4 gig ram, integrated intel graphics etc)

I was sure I would have problems but sh3 and gwx nice and smooth, 60fps etc.

Yeah yeah I know it lacks some of the eye candy, but still great fun on a cheap machine I bought for primarily for Windows work and web browsing.

For reference originally bought game in 2005 ! Long term sub sim fan right back to Silent service and RSR

Well, in anticipation of desiring to get back into SH3, for the third time in my life I am buying a new system capable of playing the game with heavy graphics mods.

The first time I custom ordered a desktop and surround sound system. Years later I bought a high end gaming notebook. Now I am buying another high end gaming rig.

My wife hates this game.:haha:

Edit: Sorry, forgot to post the new system specs. In addition to the following, I opted for a 27 inch widescreen monitor. I could have gone larger, but I am not greedy.

New Dell G5 Gaming System
9th Gen Intel® Core™ i7 9700K (8-Core/8-Thread, 12MB Cache, Overclocked up to 4.6GHz on all cores)
Windows 10 Home, 64-bit, English
NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1660 Ti 6GB GDDR6
16GB Dual Channel DDR4 at 2666MHz; up to 64GB (additional memory sold separately)
512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD (Boot) + 1TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s (Storage)
460W, Chassis with blue LED Lighting and Clear Side Panel
Qualcomm® DW1810, 1x1, 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.2

I know. I had originally ordered the simple normal chassis, but I have given this guy so much business over the years and sent others to his shop, in appreciation he upgraded the chassis no extra charge. I'm not a ride pimper but hey a free upgrade?

And thanks to all for the welcome back messages. I've missed this game for years. I had a [luckily] non-malignant brain tumour removed and I am still in a level of recovery four years later. For the first couple of years afterward I wasn't interested in books or games or anything mentally challenging. I take it as a positive sign that I feel up to playing SH3 again. I am also thinking of trying my hand again at GWX, after reading a few comments that some think the escort A.I. too soft.

Cool chassis, by the way. That thing is definitely a one of a kind. Kind of looks like the platoon radio I had to hump back in 1980 when I was a reservist rifleman. I forget the model, but it was like the ones you see in the Vietnam movies, with the folding antenna that is usually folded back, with an officer standing next to the radioman using the handpiece. Such lovely sniper targets.

Whilst awaiting arrival of my new desktop, I have decided to install SH3 on my old ASUS G37JH notebook; Intel core i7 CPU Q 720 @ 1.6 GHz, 8 GB RAM, 1 GB VRAM, Windows 10 64 bit OS on a 512 GB SSD. Crossing my fingers, this should be good enough to run GWX Gold, the mod I intend to setup and play to get me back into the game for now. I played GWX Gold as my main game until LSH2010 was released. I played LSH for a while, then I had my health challenges, which led to a several-years hiatus from the game.

Over the years I have acquired quite the library of SH3 mods, files, bits and bobs, stored over several hard drives [redundancy]. As of this post, I have installed the game from DVD, an old Starforce disc. Not to worry, I still remembered to remove the disc from my optical drive and patched it to 1.4b. and have not yet run the SH3.exe to start the game. As well, I know my next step is to install the "no-disc crack" which is a small set of files that I will install into the game directory and allow them to overwrite the original files, before I even run the game for the first time. Then hsie, SH3 Cmdr, 4 GB patch, etc. I doubt I'll have the game ready to go by bedtime, but I am not going to be hasty and careless and mess up my game. I used to do a lot of experimentation with mods and was quite good at it and I do remember that one must be very careful not to do things in the wrong order or to make errant changes.

I cannot remember why, but I have two versions of the "no-disc crack" in my archives: The first is a folder titled No Disc Crack and then I have another set in a folder labelled "Privateer Version." I have no memory of why I have two sets, but by examining file properties I can see the SH3.exe files are of different file size. Looks like I have to do some more reading in the forum before I proceed. On the off chance someone might recommend which crack version to use, I will ask this here; however, I shall exercise my due diligence and now proceed to the mods forum and so some digging.

Thanks in advance to any who might reply in the interim.

Edit: I also installed the game in a folder called C:\SH3GWX. It is also my intention to make a copy of this folder once finalized in configuration as a "clean" copy of the game in case of future need to reinstall the game. I believe from what I have read thus far about other setups under W10 that I have to run my SH3.exe and Sh3Cmdr in admin mode, W7 compatibility, correct? Off now to do some research. Thanks.

Patch

I have Sh3.exe 1.32 MB and another 2 with a tail. When you install Patch 1.6 (which contains 4 Gb patch) you will see that one of the versions is not compatible. Good luck!
