Hurricane beach party! I miss those crazy days. My mom and dad are up in age and close to the forecasted track. They'll be having coffee watching the storm go by from the kitchen window.
Odd how the young and aged both think they're invincible. :) |

Are you staying put? How far from the water's edge are you? One thing that I still marvel at is the accuracy of long range hurricane prediction, the computer modeled paths; when I was young there was nothing like this. Meteorologists would make guesses but hurricanes were noted for being unpredictable. Stay safe, man. Want to keep us updated? |
My niece in Miami is heading to Naples today. Good spot to be to ride this one out.

Just upgraded to Cat 4.

I told my mom she should probably leave the area which incidently is the projected landfall. But like a true Floridian she just shrugged and said its not her first storm and she aint movin'. I told her that this might sound weird but I dont think I would do any different. Ah well. I think its going to stay off shore anyway. |

Looking at the other models Im thinking sustained hurricane force winds will remain offshore. Its gonna be close though which is why I think NWS has no other alternative but to adjust the forecast track to the westward most model.

Skirting the shoreline as it appears to be doing will wreck havoc. Storm surge....
|
Might be a problem but its moving fairly fast and the majority of winds will most likely have a westerly component which might tame that surge a bit.
Tornados! Now those blasted things are everywhere. |

The storm surge will be significant. |
Can tell you my Mom have been a witness among some few others to see a Tornado grow and do some damage right outside her Kitchen windows
From what I remember(been some decades ago) It was in the autumn, it was cloudy and windy, when the sky suddenly turned very dark and violet. My Mom went to the window to see what it was and she saw something that looked like a funnel starting from the sky and down and from the ground something similar arose and they meet in the middle and then this tornado made its 10 second mayhem - drew up a tree, destroying some things in a playground, We was told, this, what my Mom and others had been witness to, is so rarely, not many people living ind Sweden have seen this(I lived in Sweden at that time) Markus |
Tornadoes are fairly common across Europe but usually not to the intensity that is seen in the US, where specific climatic conditions mean that the area is ripe for severe storms. Other places do have similar spots, the whole of the Phillipines is quite an active area, and the Pampas area of Argentina, and Eastern India and Bangladesh.
I was lucky enough to see a waterspout spin up and then rope out a few weeks ago, quite spectacular and one from my bucket list. Wouldn't mind seeing a plains tornado from a safe distance, but that's not likely to happen. I imagine that Matthew will probably drop a series of waterspouts and tornados along its path too. Hurricanes like to do that. |
Update as of 3:30 Eastern.
The winds here have been increasing since my second post and there's some slight rain but it's no worse then right now then some thunderstorms I've seen in the past. Matthew is still moving to the northwest at 14 miles per hour with sustained winds of 132.34 mph with landfall expected around 1:00AM eastern time, with the eye of the storm pass within a few miles or so of where I live. Right now the eye of the storm is between Nassau and Freeport in the Bahamas. |
