First thanks for the interesting photos, and story.

This got me wondering.. back in the mid-1980ies we were guests in an antiques shop in Norwich, and the owner showed us some photos of him and his men in the army, having killed some rebels in the 1950ies, or 1960ies. I do not remember where he said it happened, could have been somewhere in Indonesia, or Burma(?), or Korea?
Where did the english army (guy was irish though) fight, in those years? :hmmm:

Aden Crisis

It was probably Aden (now Yemen)... they had to be pretty hands-on out there from what I've heard. Many years ago I heard all about one such bloody encounter from an ex-soldier who was there... he bragged about the large number of rebels they'd killed.

@ CW... yes he did pretty well, considering he also survived at least three near-death experiences whilst serving with the Royal Welch Fusiliers in WW2!

Thanks, maybe :salute:
Though the background looked more like a forest area, but i then saw it 32 years ago :o

edit: but may well be possible:

Could it possibly have been The Malayan Emergency?

Could be (my uncle was in that as an Army dog-handler)

Catfish 03-08-18 02:03 PM

Sorry for derailing the thread from Korea

Yes, it was Malaya! I do now remember the name, seems he was there to fight the insurgents. The pictures he showed us were gruesome to say at least.. his 17-year old shop assistant Tracey was a bit aroused, and sure had a different view of him thereafter.
He just said that those 'operations' were the same the world over, and that what Germany did in Russia was perfectly normal, in all other armies.
As a 22-year-old more or less left-oriented young 'man' i did not believe him, back then.

Yes I'd forgotten about Malaya and the more I thought about it the more likely that seemed to me, too. My uncle was sent there as it coincided with his 'National Service' commitment. Well spotted, August :yep:

I think maybe "Gaton" was the artist... he was going around doing these for soldiers as they sat in a cafeteria
