Ah yep, I should've clarified that I meant Germans :yep:

It's certainly possible to make those kinds of attacks! Likewise, it's possible to make your attack plots by radar, and for example US submarines in the pacific actually used that as well. If you're interested in that, the TMO mod for SH4 even supports radar (and sonar) info being fed directly into the TDC on American subs.

And although not designed for submerged attack, I've consistently read in reports that captured German hydrophone equipment was considered sophisticated and of very high quality by the Allies. (Although this is also true of German optics, so perhaps it's no surprise the Germans relied on periscopes for accuracy first and foremost).

The geometrical knowledge needed is not that demanding either. It's probably about doctrinal and technical (optics radar targeting automation etc) differences. I also think that the training of the non-officer crewmen onf the U-boats' might have been less demanding than what was taught to the Allied crewmen

Yup :yep:

Weather quite often wreaked havoc on U-boat operations, so your frustration is understandable but not at all unrealistic.

So far I've had it in each patrol even in mid summer. About three days after leaving port I get 15m/s which will usually last for about two to three weeks. Then a few short days of calm seas and here we go again. Rinse and repeat.
It seems at least 3/4 of my patrol time are spend in bad weather regardless of season. I don't think that's realistic at all...

Sorry for the OT but I've just recently reinstalled SH3 after a break of several years and was immediately reminded on my first patrol why I had abandoned the game before. I guess there is just no proper subsim out there that fulfills all of my needs.:88)

GWX made all these troubles disappear for me.

Stiebler's 4c took care of the rest of the continuous 15 m/s winds. The weather is still a mess (exactly the same weather for a day or two) but I've grown accustomed to it.
