I understand, but considering the fact that GWX is basically tons of new configuration files for added realism, new models or improved models, and new or modified sounds, it cannot possibly be related to hardware since these are all used by the game engine, which is contained within the executable. The executable runs the stock configuration perfectly. We change the configuration and it stops running correctly. This is why I keep asking how I can view the configuration files and/or what files to view. It may be a simple line commented out that needs to be uncommented.

Also, do me a favor. Would you mind starting SH3 with JUST GWX installed, doing a single mission, and recording a short video of the sounds? If you could so I can compare with my install it would greatly help. Maybe this is the way it is supposed to sound, but even if the diesels are super-quiet, I should hear waves breaking on the bow when in heavy seas. All I hear is water lapping gently.

I don't have any games installed currently, as my PC won't run them with the mods I want. If nobody else helps out within the next day I will be glad to reinstall. We need to get this straightened out.

My reasoning for asking this favor is that if it sounds on your end as it does on mine and this is "normal", then the issue is that GWX turned down the diesel sounds WAY too low. I did just do "Courageous" with 74% realism (I like external view, sue me) and had a flawless victory. Not a scratch on the boat (192m, it did creak a bit...) but their carrier submerged rather quickly. Anyway, after the destroyers left I surfaced and in the moderate seas I did hear the waves again. No changes to any configuration, it just started working.

No diesels though, and that is what I like to hear. I love the sound of a running engine. The valves tapping like a sewing machine and all.

One thing you can try in the meantime: Use your computer's onboard Sound Recorder, or an external sound editor, to open Submarine_diesel_exterior. If you can hear it alright there then something is keeping it from getting through. If you can hear it but very faintly you can use Sound Recorder or another sound program to raise the volume for that one file. If you can't hear it at all then we can check to see if the file is blank for some reason. The file itself can be replaced if that is so. I always keep a copy of the stock Data folder in a safe place just so I can check this sort of thing.

As I have said before, playing the exterior file in Windows Media Player works fine, and it sounds decent. I just cannot hear it in-game, though everything else in-game is fine, such as voices, torpedo sounds, warship sounds, etc. It is just the diesel exterior sound.

This, "Engine sounds no longer emanate from the bows of ships," from page 524 of the GWX 3.0Gold Manual. When in doubt, read the ****ing manual. :D Ya gotta love it!

Sephiroth 02-13-14 05:51 PM

I read that. It doesn't make any noise on the surface. Read the thread. Also, I never had engine sounds from the bow prior to or after installing GWX. My issue is that it is silent when on the surface, but if I use the camera view to go underwater, I can hear the diesels loud and clear.

*EDIT*

You do realize that they are referring to ships there, right? Just making sure, since my problem involves u-boat diesel sounds.

I just completed a fresh installation of SH3, 1.4b cracked and GWX 3.0 Gold, no mods installed whatsoever. Running naval academy\navigation\training, from the F4 view (on the bridge) I clearly hear the diesels. I command "all stop" the diesel noise stops and all that can be heard is a gentle lapping of the waves. Command "ahead 1/3" the diesel noise returns. So what choices are we left with for the reason you can't hear the diesels? If the GWX team had commented out the diesel noise I would not hear it. Exclusive to your copy? I'm not buying that, sorry. If it's not your hardware/software then it's a corrupt installation. If it was me I would re-download the GWX files, run the Jonesoft MD5Mate to verify the files, then perform a full clean installation of SH3/GWX. If that doesn't fix it I'd be back to thinking hardware/system software. Btw, I just tried running plain vanilla full stock SH3 in naval academy\navigation\training. The diesel sound is there, but it is clearly more distinct, fuller, in GWX. The diesel noise stops and returns when I tell it to. Hardware, corruption or some incompatibility with your software, could there be another choice? There are a lot of people running GWX on Win7 without a problem. Personally, I'm still using Vista, problem free.

I downloaded GWX from the GWX site, so I know they're legit. I do not use SH3 Commander. I tried it and didn't care for it. Also, I only have JSGME due to the GWX install. Thanks for the links, but unless the files at this location are different, those appear to be identical to what I downloaded.

Again, my only issue at this time appears to be the boat diesel engines when on the surface. The ships sound fine.

Jimbuna 02-14-14 03:18 PM

There have been issues reported regarding the links on the official website in the past.

My posted links are the originals.

So whilst not being prepared to guarantee they will work they may still be worth a try.

Sephiroth 02-15-14 12:36 AM

I did not know that. I will grab the files you posted tomorrow. Thanks!

That did it! I uninstalled, deleted the Ubisoft folder, deleted my SH3 folder, rebooted, installed, patched, cracked, installed GWX from your links, went right in and started a career. I now have diesel sounds again, both from the topside areas of my boat (con, AA gun, deck gun) but also from the free camera view. They do sound a LOT more like they should topside now, and less like a machine-gun up top. I also had my splashing sounds back as the boat moved through the ocean.

This brings up a question though. If this is the correct download, what the heck is linked on the GWX site? Can't the GWX team link to the files on MediaFire that you linked to me? I have been digging for over a week and found many others with sound issues like mine on both the official Ubisoft forums and other places, as well as one or two here.

Now, to make this easier for others, I am going to edit my initial post with the solution and what is not needed, such as compatibility mode. SH3 is 100% Windows 7 compatible and does not need anything special to run. Anyway, thanks to everybody for their suggestions and to Jimbuna for the solution. The diesels are still quiet, but loud enough to hear at 1/3 and very audible above that.

First off, I'm pleased your sorted.

The links on the website are to the same files as those on my Mediafire account, files used by thousands of GWX users since its release.

What we have noticed over the years are a small number of users reporting issues, so on two separate occasions we have updated the website with those from Mediafire.

There are many who have re-downloaded or re-installed the website files and experienced a successfull outcome so it is way beyond my or anyone else understanding what the problem must be I should imagine.

The GWX team ceased to exist a few years ago and as such I am one of the few still around and act as the repositry for the original files and the odd piece of advice when needed but judging by the number of GWX users here that is seldom needed.

My role here as a moderator on SubSim is a totally separate function.
