some good news

I re-installed SH3 on the old computer, in a directory called games, outside the programs file, and so far, so good, even with modified config.
However, I am getting the crew fatigue, which is the dumbest thing I have seen in a sim to date. I originally had the no crew fatigue mod but cannot find it, and I did look in the downloads section , but all I found was a no crew fatigue mod for one of the "mod" versions of the game. Is there a basic no crew fatigue mod for a stock game?
My config mods are basically change the enter key to normal time compression instead of torpedo fire, and some mods to up and down periscope, and a few things like that.
thanks!

Well, it sounds like you've got SH3 running. Is this on the Win 7 or the Win XP computer? As for the fatigue models, if you install SH3 Commander you will find it has a list of different fatigue models built in to choose from, one of which is "no fatigue." I would install it in the same folder as you installed SH3, although not in the SH3 directory, but rather, alongside it, someplace like C:\Games\SH3 Commander. You can find it here: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom//dow...o=file&id=2923

Manually edit the [FATIGUE_COEF] section of /Data/CFG/basic.cfg to remove all fatigue:

Edited file should look like this:

For SH3 on Win7 you may need the latest DirectX9.0c files (iirc June2010).

i.e. http://www.filehippo.com/download_directx/

They don't overwrite any later DX installations, but add the missing components originally distributed with XP.

Now try again to start SH3.exe

Still no joy?

Rightclick the SH3.exe to open the context menue - Run as administrator

If it still doesn't work - rightclick the SH3.exe -> "Properties" -> tab "Compatibility" - and select "Run software in compatibility mode" and "WindowsXP
ServicePack3".

Go for the SH3 Commander!

Good point. Win 7 has DX10 (or 11, not sure) But some parts of DX9 were not included in de newer version. So much for being downwards compatible.

more progress

I tried everything suggested above on the new computer Win7) with no luck. However on the old computer, I installed a backup of the basic config file and ran two test missions, one single and one campaign, with no crashes. Next step is to manually fix the crew fatigue problem, add some custom missions and a less rain mod, and I am off to the races. will give up on the new computer as long as it works on the old one.
vielen Dank!

Please define "No luck"! That's not a very descriptive expression of what happend when you tried.

I'm sure most of us do not have their magic ball/palantir/Akashic records subscription interface/JATD(Just-Another-Telepathic-Device) in working condition at the moment. Atleast mine doesn't, as I dropped it during the last depthcharge attack. If you really want help with getting Windows 7 to run then you really need provide more information on what happend during installation and game execution. Anything out of the ordinary is of importance.

"no luck"

"no luck" means that when I try to run SH3 on my new computer which is running Win 7, I get a message something to the effect: " This application can be launched with a release version of Microsoft Windows 95 98/ ME/NT,XP Server only."
I tried running as Administrator and with all of the compatibility options, and downloaded Direct X 9.0c (one of the Direct X links provided above had some malware according to Nortons)

Assuming I can run SH3 on my old computer I am ready to give up on the new one, but will gladly accept any further suggestions.
Thanks for all the help!

Read these links, link number two has an excellent information on win 7 and starforce.

GreyBeard 02-01-14 10:15 AM

Kudos to Pabbi! :salute: After briefly reviewing the links you provided I get it. It's STARFORCE that is incompatible with W7, not SH3. Replace the original sh3.exe with the cracked version and it will run on W7 trouble free.

The application it is referring to is STARFORCE not SH3.

When you install SH3 it should also install any necessary Dx9 files that aren't already there.

:yeah:

To help you any further with SH3 on Win7 we need more qualified info on your computer (i.e. your DirectX Protocol - it doesn't matter if your rig is/isn't connected to the web)
and more info about your installation medium.
(i.e. what version is your SH3.exe - patched or not and therefore starforced or not)

Or you follow pabbi's links and work on it yourself.

@ GreyBeard - the SH3 versions produced and sold after the Windows Vista release are without the StarForce drivers, as Ubisoft didn't want to invest in the new driver versions for an old game.

As long as we don't have more info on Joe S's hardware/software, all help is just shooting into the blue.

You are 100% correct.

Well, maybe yes, maybe no. You're here and obviously willing to try, as am I. :D :salute:

Thanks!

Joe is telling us he has the Starforce version. About 2 months ago I reinstalled SH3 on my Vista machine after a couple of years hiatus. I received the same error message as Joe did. I knew it was about Starforce. When I ran the SF removal tool it stated there were no SF files to be found. Due to the incompatibility with Vista SF would not install the protection drivers and thus prevented the game from running. Once I installed the cracked version of SH3 the problem was solved. :yeah:

Joe S 02-02-14 06:56 PM

Thanks for all your help everyone. I got SH3 working on my old computer, ran a career mission,(about 1.5-2 hrs) without problems, so I am giving up on trying to get it to work on the new computer. Thanks for all the help!

This link:

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=160118 (The last mentioned by Pabbi)

describes how you can fix this problem in Win7 by overwriting some game files with hacked files. These used to be forbidden to talk about because of copyright infringements. But theseday for reasons of neccessity because of this Starforce crap, it is sanctioned. Or use is condoned. But Neal doesn't want the files stored in his download section it appears.

It's easy to find with google though. Just ask it to locate the word:
rld-sh14.rar
and it should give an url about copying worlds of games or something like that. ;) Replace those files after patching to 1.4 and it should work. (Just like in Neals thread.) Though some virusscanners may think this is malware because it cannot see what goes on in the code, as it is likely encrypted internally. So you may need to tell your virusscanner to ignore these files or the SH3 install folder.

I'm having a similar problem

I can't open SH3 at all but the msg. i get is: The instruction at 0x04e7a60 referenced memory at 0x1201e2d4. The memory could not be written. (the 1st set of numbers and letters is always the same but the 2nd set changes)
I'm running windows xp also but have had the same SH3 game on it about a year.
However i will try the option that Joe S. used under the title "some good news" ..the 1st paragraph. Hope this works when i figure out how to do this.
