Still not as controversial as the time a US Marine threw a puppy off a cliff.

Some people care more about animals than they do humans.People in the US(and doubt in Western Europe and Australia) some treat their dog just like a human being and even think of having dogs as equal to having actual children.I like my pets and treat them well but not on that level.
In the US people have murdered other people because they ran over their pet in some cases the person stopped to "help" only to get killed by a nut other times they got chased down by the owner. There are people in the Us who would not bat an eye if everyone in some third world country died but would be distraught over the death of a dog or cat.
As if a puppy would have had a good life in Afghanistan most will die young if they live long enough they are used as fighting dogs not such a great life. With NATO troops it would not be much better they use the flea killing collars on themselves and wear one around each ankle to try and kill fleas which are rampant over there. And chances are that someone that dislikes dogs will shoot it sooner or later.
