Hmm, they do not seem to be so much bigger than hornets in Germany.
They are no threat here though, unless you get too near to their hive, which is very small b.t.w.. And near means really near, less than 10 centimeters. Any more distance and they will usually ignore you, unless you anger them with a stick.

We sat on a balcony eating cake, and a hornet's hive was in the upper corner of said balcony. No problem at all, they were less interested than wasps, which would have landed immediately on our cake - not so the hornets. They just flew away directly into the woods, and came back. The sound was unusal though, a deep drone but not really threatening.

And a sting does really really hurt, but you would not get killed by it .. happened to me when i sat down on one, in my car.

I prefer hornets to wasps.

Like CatFish said, they're a lot less agresive, even when you're near a hive.

I think these are the same wasps that nat geo did a documentary on, the ones that raid the honey bee hives and pillage the hive.

Could you imagine if these things crossbred with the Africanized bees!:o

That wasp's size and that bee's temper.
Now that would be nasty.:dead:

Markus

I'm not sure Markus, in that article they are talking about wasps, but who knows. It just might be the same story?

Would you like your roasted hornets with or without the stinger?
