The British subs based at Malta 1940-1943 probably had the toughest task of any sub service, shallow crystal clear sea, a formidable anti-sub opponent [one of the few things the Italians were good at] and either boats that were too large [T and O classes] or boats that could not carry enough torps [S and U classes]. They had to paint them Blue to try to hide them from the air the water is so clear! Their base was under constant air attack to the point that they were even driven out once. The losses were nearly as bad as the U-boats were later in the war. Now that would be a Hard campaign. Complete a patrol only to be sunk at base. SINK ROMMELS SHIPPING!!
