The Alaskas are a cool ship, but actually more of a case of convergent evolution for similar roles than true battlecruisers - they were also designed to hunt down the big, fast Japanese cruisers and German pocket battleships, and also traded speed for protection. But they were actually just a really, really overgrown cruiser, and despite similar appearance their design lineage and hull form are those of a big CL/CA. They were also built specifically to keep their size and weight down, something BC designs never did.

But yup, their real problem was that by the time they were in the ocean, most of the Japanese CAs and German raiders were on the bottom, with the survivors having no chance of going raiding :yep:

I'd list the Mackensens and the Dutch project 1047 as my favourites.

Pretty famous battlecruiser too! :yep: Caused quite a big kerfuffle when the British realized they were building a better battlecruiser for the IJN than anything their own navy had (which led to a hasty redesign of the Tiger that was already under construction). Arguably Kongo was the best British-built battlecruiser of WWI - she was a much more balanced and better-protected design than any of the RN's battlecruisers during the war.

I pick HMS Queen Mary - a beautiful name for a beautiful ship.

All things considered she was probably the best battlecruiser in the Grand Fleet in 1916, with a heavy armament, great fire control equipment, and better armor than earlier ships. Tragically, the problems with British ammunition handling sealed her fate.

Tiger, the Lutzows, Moltkes, and the Invincibles are also close behind in my favorites.
