This is not all that unusual of a reaction. We have it in this country also. When bystanders are in a group, no one wants to be the first and people think "someone else" will take action.

We have people bleeding out in front of bystanders here. It does not mean that the bystanders are bad people. It is an unfortunate form of group psychology.

What is especially terrible about the instances here is that the bystanders are not ignoring the injured but are too busy recording it on their stupid cell phones to render aid.

That's what really disgusts me. I can understand group psychology resulting in people not taking action. I can't understand people more interested in taking pictures then rendering aid, or even using that cell phone not to take pictures but to call EMS.

Cell phones were not widespread when I was on the squads, but we had plenty of runs where there were bystanders just standing by.

It is human nature. Not a particularly good form of human nature, but one that is understandable.

Apparently the woman who finally did stop and help the poor little girl has been so harassed by neighbors that she's been forced to leave her home.

China seems to have become so utilitarian that it can’t understand or even tolerate people who do things for altruistic reasons. The penniless scrap peddler rescued Wang Yue not because she was internally doing a cost-benefit analysis in her head or anticipating the material rewards of doing so (as some Chinese have accused her of doing), but because it was the right thing to do.

According to the Shanghaiist, the public attention has traumatized Chen Xianmei, and has prompted her to flee her home of Foshan:

The drivers and passers-by should be hounded from their homes, not Chen Xianmei.

That may yet happen if there is any justice...it is China however :hmmm:
