I will be 47 this fall but my older sister turned 59 and my older brother turned 69 earlier this year. I was, as they put it in their kinder moments, the "surprise."
Still not quite the 20-year gap your mum got surprised with though. But I can remember being in high school and having not only veteran teachers who were younger than my parents, but veteran teachers whose parents were younger than my parents.
In some ways it sucks but in other ways it's kind of cool - because my parents were young during the Depression and WWII, I grew up getting a lot of exposure to things that a lot of kids my age knew nothing about - like "pop culture" and firsthand history from that era. Plus I still got schooled in stuff from subsequent generations by my siblings.
