In order to get that cushy desk job either you need to majorly screw up (in which case it isn't going to be a very pleasant one), become a tonnage ace (at the very least 100k, 150k would be more promising) that transfers to a training command; or be a high achiever (50k - 100k tonnage) and get command of your own Flotilla.
Would still need politcal connections though, by late 44/45 anyone that could operate a rowboat was being commissioned a u-boat officer or given command of their own boat. By then you'd have to have proven yourself at your current job or face having to go back out on the seas when the severe lack of (any) experienced officers at all are available to command boats.
Since you were talking about a nice plush retirement away from war......anyone else know that Dr. Mengele had a son? He lives here in Los Angeles as an artist. It is interesting to see his works; its nothing gruesome, but one can draw their own conclusions as to his influence (despite the father being largely absent in raising him).
