I'm pretty sure that by default the GWX installer looks at the folder where the game would be if you installed it from the game disk. This is different than the location where a Steam installation ends up, leading to the error. And I'm pretty sure other Steam users have had that same error about modded files being found even though they haven't modded anything. GWX is just looking in the wrong place and finding files other than the stock game stuff.
Use the Browse function to point it at the game folder, which would be the one titled "Silent Hunter 3" or whatever inside all those Steam folders. Steam/steamapps/common/Silent hunter3 sounds right to me, at any rate it should be the folder containing the SH3.exe file. Oh and Privateer is not here but if he were he would tell you that you MUST turn your volume ALL the way up or the installation won't work. However he is very naughty boy. :O: |
Okay I think we don't understand each other here. It shouldn't matter where you put the GWX files you downloaded through Utorrent. Those are just the files needed to install GWX. Put em in your downloads folder or something.
Then double click GWX3.exe. It should install itself without any problems if you got SH3 installed clean; without any other mods whatsoever. Like I said, I'm doing this from memory, as I don't have the original GWX install files anymore, but AFTER double clicking GWX3.0.exe, it will ask you where you want GWX to be installed. You don't have to put it in the same folder as SH3. Put it in any folder you want. (I for example put it in c:/games/GWX) THEN gwx will ask where your SH3 folder is located. I don't have sh3 through steam, but I got other games that way, so I think like FrauKaleun said your sh3 folder is indeed Steam/steamapps/common/Silent hunter3/. Just put that in when GWX3.o installer asks for it. |
^^ what he said. :D
Edit: and if you downloaded the GWX torrent file into that game folder (Steam/steamapps/common/Silent hunter3) you need to move it from there to somewhere else on your hard drive so that there's nothing in your game folder except the stock SH3 files that came with your Steam installation. Then do the double clicky on the GWX installation from the new location. |
Wow guys thank you helped me SO MUCH! :yeah:
Ill be in the open waters in no time. One more thing, Is FM interior mod compatible with GWX? sorry about my rock-headed-ness but you helped so much! thank you a million times over |
No problem m8. Glad to help.
FM Interior is compatible with GWX. However, it asks quite a bit from your pc. Don't run it myself as my computer is 4 years old, but if you can run it it's a great mod. |
:yeah:
Right now, Collin, get the game up and running with GWX. Commander too, if you want, since it's stand-alone and you can put mods in and out of the game without Commander being affected. There are SO many mods out there for so many things, give the game a go first with what you've got to get acclimated to it before you go nuts downloading and installing a bunch of other mods. With so much to choose from it's all too easy to get obsessed with mods to the point where you spend all your time downloading and tinkering and none playing! (I speak from experience here.) GWX comes with quite a few optional mods already, if you click on the JSGME shortcut to open the mod enabler it comes with, you should see all of them listed there. Play around with those too, they're all designed for GWX so you should be good there (but check out the GWX manual for details on them first, or ask - some of them are only for use in certain situations, like patrolling the Black Sea or other specific areas of the world). What are your system specs as far as OS, RAM, gfx card, etc.? FM Interiors is one of the "heavier" mods, as noted above. |
Frau Kaleun, you're so right. It's not the mods that got me distracted though; it's skin making. I played some other games that really got me into skinning, (Football Manager for example) but with sh3 I'm getting really hooked on that. So in order to get myself to focus on what it's really about; I'm gonna patrol the South-American east coast right now!! :arrgh!:

I have Windows 7 64-bit
3.00GB RAM (2.97 usable) AMD sempron LE-1200 2.10 GHZ Video Card: GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 |
You may want to run the 4GB patch for the game .exe file, that will let it use more RAM than it was originally designed to recognize. Even though you don't have 4+ gigs installed, every little bit counts. Especially since you're running the 64-bit OS which will give you more advantages if you are able to add RAM to the rig at some point, if so you'll want the game to get as much out of that as possible too.
You can read more about it and get the download links here, http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/show...ight=4GB+patch but until you start piling on more mods it's not something that's a must-have. I think for just the game + GWX you should be fine for now. How much memory on your video card though? |
Oh lord I have no idea.
I dont even know how to find out what my video card is! I click computor then properties, thats were i find everything else but The video card's not there. I just go to A website that shows you if you can run a game and it tells me what kind of card it is. :SIDE QUESTION: how do you work the freecam? once I get on it I click it and I can only move it around in circles, I thought you could move it around. I know I shouldent be using it but I was only using it because I was being Depth Charged. |
use the cam as you wish. PLay the game as you want.
Arrow keys move the camera, shift-arrows go faster. Zoom! But theres no reference points (in GWX), especially when submerged, so mark where the sun is in relation to where you want to go. |

Regarding the freecam in the game, I think what you want is what you get by pressing Shift+F2 on the keyboard, this will let you move around the interior like you're walking around by using the arrow keys, instead of just turning the cam in a big circle around wherever you're standing. |
For computer spec information, download the free version of SANDRA. It will tell you anything you can imagine, right down to who manufactured each memory stick and when.
