A patrol that I think even Jim would consider aggressive enough:

Was in a type VIIB in March of 41' and had zero luck finding any convoys as I kept heading west; once I finally passed the Belchen supply ship I said screw it and would just go straight to the source - Halifax. By the time I got there the weather was pretty much a gale so was able to travel around on the surface in the otherwise very shallow water to get to the promised land:

In the time it took to get from the main Halifax harbor to this staging area the weather started to ease up a bit so that I was able to see the targets from ~1000m away instead of 400m like it was when I entered the harbor and sunk the big tankers there. Then used the deck gun to finish off all the remaining large targets that I wasn't able to use a torpedo on or they didn't sink with just 1 eel.

My obsessive / compulsive nature, however, thinks you sank exactly one ton too many. :D

it appears I under-estimated my best patrol. One I did back in april 2010 when in command of U-103 in one of my first GWX campaign's.

Jim...Only a 1/4 million? sounds to me that you let quite a few merchants get by you.

You need to "Be More Aggressive" ! :har:

Used the deck gun till it was dry, trying to maneuver around that area submerged is extremely difficult. Ironically it provided difficult at times having to manuever backwards enough to hit below the waterline and not hit another ship or burning wreck.

Too much later in the timeline when all merchants are armed makes getting into this area nearly impossible. Only with the most severe/zero visibility weather (and nightime) do you have any hope of getting through, the route isn't mined but extremely shallow. If you don't go down the middle you ground you end up beaching your boat.

Well done! In real life, they would have invented a new medal just for you.

What sort of ASW did you get in there? And how did you ever get out?

I LOL'd at this.

I just saw MN perking up at the words Deck Gun. I love my deck gun, but the epic stories I've heard from MN make me smile every time I fire mine.

And pssssst: I perked up too, any 'convoy' that I can use a deck gun is a good convoy.

Under 250 000 GRT, you have not done a good enough job, according to reliable sources, :DL

First you need to get into Halifax harbor (which is pretty easy), go up the western side around all the docks and then head NE to the little river that you see that goes North to a large lake. Best done at night when you can travel on the surface (in the river) and avoid shore battery detection, the worse the visibility the easier it is to sneak through. Once on the river don't try to use the map to plot a course, to keep from beaching your boat you'll need to do it all by eye.

Around the harbor there's the usual ASW of a couple trawlers. There's some shore batteries at the mouth of the river though once your moving up the river itself I've never encountered any. Getting into the lake is extremely awkward and (even early on) there will be a few armed merchants there so once you manage to make the 90 degree turn you'll need to submerge and sink them first. Getting out is a lot easier since you can (provided you sink all the armed merchants) go out the whole way on the surface, then exit the same way (don't go down the east side of the harbor otherwise you hit some nasty subnets as wake up some DD's that are sitting nearby). All the ships are stationary and its deep enough that you can move around and check out which ships are armed via your periscope and then start taking those out first.
