The city of Baltimore thought it would look cool and attract visitors. In part it does. Mouth has been there ever since I can remember. The voluteers who are doing the restoration would like it to be removed. No dice.

Shame that they feel real history has to take a back seat to tourist dollars.

I've always like the look of a submarine in drydock. So much of it is below the water that when you see it out of the water it is amazing. I couldn't believe how massive my boat was when I saw it in drydock the first time.

Sadly this is the colors the city painted INSIDE the Torsk. Really...no kidding. The forward engines were electric blue. :88) Plus various other colors all over the place. It was not far off from marmalade skys! :doh:

As much as I truly loathe the shark's teeth on the boat - and I do, truly, loathe them - if it's gonna bring in a few bucks that wouldn't otherwise be there to help keep her from becoming a reef, I reckon I can live with 'em.

Exactly, I think the Torsk is the only Fleet Snort with the old style sails preserved, the Requin has the more generic Northern Sail.

The size of the drydock is enormous. We see she needs some new sheets of thick steel. I understand power washing starts tomorrow if all the crude and dead fish have been removed from the floor of the dry dock.

Absolutely Growler. You know as well as I as we stood there on the deck watching, these teeth attrack the young kids who want to see 'the shark' boat. I can live with them just as long as they get a fresh coat of paint every year. :up:

I see your point. I'd rather see her with the teeth than see her scrapped. But I still think it's wrong. These boats shouldn't need a gimmick to bring people in.

Agree - totally. AVG and I have spoken on the deck of Torsk on a busy Saturday. We've seen the kids come streaming out of the big fish tank (NAIB) next door, only to be totally enraptured by the grinning shark's teeth sitting there right in front of them - it's totally inappropriate, but I'll be damned if it's not keeping some dollars coming into the boat, and I'm totally NOT against that.

The good thing is, for those who care to know, it's a short answer to their question: No, those wouldn't have been on the boat in service - they're there because Baltimore wanted to bring people to the boat. The ones who care understand - and I've garnered more than a few donations from people who do so in the hopes that their dollars will go to painting over the shark. The folks who don't get it, probably never will.

Neat pictures! last Fleet boat I ever saw was the Drum, while it was still in the water back in 93.



I'm gonna hazard a guess and say, no... never. For the most part, identifying marks like that just weren't done. At least not that i know of. You will find a picture or two of conning tower art, but nothing like sharks teeth. Im gonna guess again, that would give an admiral, somewhere, a kiniption.
