Funny - when those of us with morals speak out against things like homosexuality (abberant) or the rampant sexualization of society (decadence) - we are castigated for it.Not that you personally do so Alex, but many here choose to complain about the "right wing moralists" and yet are the first to point the finger at the decay when its convienent to talk about a manor export of America (pornography) and why some in the world revile us.

Can't have it both ways. Either we are wrong when we take a stand, or we are wrong to accept moral decay. All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing, While mostly attributed (incorrectly) to Burke, the truth of the statement itself remains. Some choose not to stand by, and in the case of France, good for them for taking a stand on something.

Wow, France really dodged a bullet there. We all know how disastrous it would be to let two adults who love each other enter into a legal relationship. Thank goodness this discrimination against a group of people for no good reason will continue. It's tradition, after all, and tradition is never wrong.

The problem I have with that argument (especially the quote) is that the assessment of what is moral varies from culture to culture, and from person to person. Morality based on personal rights (anything that harms another person) is, to me, obvious, but sexual morality not so much. Is licentousness truly harmful? I don't know, and I question whether anyone else truly does either. So while I think your opinion on this is just as valid as mine, I believe the use of the "Burke quote" to be not so.

I agree to a point regarding morals. What you do in the privacy of your home is your business. That is why I don't have a problem with gays entering into a civil contract if they choose to. That's between them.

My point was the hypocrisy of saying that we are wrong for letting "moral decadence" run amok in our country, while we are castigated if we take a moral stand. Either you stand on certain morals or you don't. They don't have to be sexual morals. That was simply an example.

Its one of those "if you take a stand, your damned for it" and "if you don't take a stand, your damned for it" comments that I see as a double standard way too often. Not that Alex himself does it, but its often seen on the interwebs, and here I'd like to see a little less....

I think I understand. Maybe I don't recognize your "damned if you do/don't" observation because I try not to act that way myself and don't recognize it when others do. And your point is a good one.
