Partly, by ancestry: I'm pretty sure someone on my mother's father's side came to this country with the name "Skoulianos" or whatever the correct original spelling was.

But when it comes to the language, I'm not a Greek, just a Googler. :O:

But she does admit to being a geek, if that counts.

:haha:

Not only that, but a Greek geek. AKA a Hellenophile, I believe is the word for it. A Greek geek of some Greek ancestry.

I will also unashamedly claim to be as Greek as necessary if there is baklava involved and it looks like I might get some. :D

In Dashiell Hammett's novel The Thin Man Nora Charles refers to husband Nick as "My Ancient Greek". The family name is something like Nikopolous, and he's a bit older than her. I don't remember if the line made it into the movie. :sunny:

You know, I just recently saw that all the way through for the first time - only caught bits of it before, and I always turned it off because I'd missed the beginning and didn't want to spoil it for myself. It was on TCM's schedule so I recorded it - what a hoot! I adore Myrna Loy and she and Powell play so well off each other.

Nick: I'm a hero. I was shot twice in the Tribune.
Nora: I read where you were shot 5 times in the tabloids.
Nick: It's not true. He didn't come anywhere near my tabloids.

:rotfl2:

To tell you the truth the dialogue is so quick and snappy I'm not sure if that line made it in either, but I don't remember it.

Which country? USA?

Skoulianos is a greek name indeed.

For Greek people you are Greek, because for us, the point is DNA, no the passport. But nobody is oblige to agree with these logic...

Sorry for bad English, to be honest I prefer French, like ours host here...

Yes.

My mother's father's family name was Schooley. I always assumed it was of British origin, but when I got older and started looking it up, everything I found says it's the Anglicized form of Skoulianos and has no other origin. Even the few people I know of confirmed Greek ethnicity have told me the same thing.

Funny thing was, when my mother was growing up there was another family down the street who were very definitely Greek - recent immigrants or the first generation of same to have been born in the US. Their last name was also Schooley and so my mother and her siblings used to joke that they all must be Greek also, because they had the same last name. They had no idea that they all probably got that name exactly the same way - either an ancestor changed it to make it sound more "American," or some immigration official couldn't do any better when filling out all the paperwork. :haha:

Well, I am Greek, German, Scottish, Cherokee, and no doubt there is some Irish, English and Dutch and who knows what all else in there as well. Aside from the Greek and Cherokee, just your standard Northern European hodgepodge. I will lay claim to any and all of it as the occasion allows. :D
