And I'm surprised it took this long for this thread to appear on subsim.

without reading the article, is it about the change in the axial tilt of the Earth from the time the zodiac was written down to current day?

Besides, the zodiac is demonstrably a load of horse**** even without this nail in its coffin.

Sailor Steve 01-18-11 01:19 AM

I guess I'm a Pisces now. I always thought there was something fishy about my signs.

If you read the whole article, the whole thing is just a lot of meaningless hoo-ha over nothing, even to astrologers. The cited reasons for the "shift" don't affect Western astrology, which is what we're all talking about here.

Quote:

But this is an annoying red herring for astrologers.

They point out that this precession only affects "sidereal" astrology, a system commonly used in India and by other people with an interest in "Vedic" astrology. In this system signs do shift.

"People might be Aquarian under the tropical system but a Capricorn under the Vedic system," says astrologer Russell Grant.

But in the "tropical zodiac", the system used by Western astrologers, there are fixed sectors of the sky through which the movement of the sun, moon and planets is tracked to create the basis for horoscopes.

"The tropical zodiac is fixed and immovable. It is static - whatever happens to the Earth's axis."

These sectors of the sky use the equinoxes as reference points, not the constellations upon which the star signs are based.
Quote:

The suggestion of a 13th sign - "Ophiuchus" - is also dismissed by astrologers. They point out that the Babylonians consciously chose 12 signs.

In other systems there have also been signs for "Arachne" and "Cetus the Whale", notes Grant.

Both the effect of precession on the zodiac and the presence of a 13th sign are stories that crop up in the press every few years, Grant explains.
Quote:

But for all those people that believe in astrology or set some kind of lesser emotional store on the signs of the zodiac, they can rest easy. The Tauruses are still Taurus and the Arieses are still Aries.

Is that not how this works? Frack! I'll bet it's like that damn Chinese zodiac with dogs being compatible with horses or monkeys or whatnot. With all the easy, one-size-fits-all, lame-ass excuses guys come up with to get women, you'd think one as old and popular as the zodiac would be more easy to use.

Okay, maybe virgos aren't compatible, but I am on a horse.:smug: What do you think of that?

frau kaleun 01-18-11 12:03 PM

Yep, in the Chinese zodiac, though, it's a 12-year (not month) cycle and typically the signs that are 4 years apart are considered most compatible with each other.

Rat, Dragon, and Monkey
Ox, Snake, and Rooster
Tiger, Horse, and Dog
Hare, Sheep, and Pig

It's further complicated by the fact that the Chinese year does not start on Jan 1 like the Western calendar year, and IIRC also by the fact that the actual start of Chinese New Year varies from year to year. So despite some of the charts so popular on Chinese restaurant placemats, being born in, say, 1964 does not mean one is a Dragon (which I most definitely am) - it depends on whether or not your birth "made the cut" for 1964 in terms of the Chinese calendar.

Edit: sorry, right, horse, very nice. OTOH you might want to rethink the assless chaps. :hmmm:

Oddly enough, Aquarius is not a Water sign. Its element is Air.

In the language of origin I'm pretty sure that 'virgo' does = 'virgin.'

I, however, do not. :O:
