Stoianm, your solution seems to have worked so thank you. I am still perplexed by the odd behaviour of the Hunter Killer groups in the Bay of Biscay. Should they even be there in 1940?

One of them detaches from the main group and shadows at a constant distance no matter what heading I proceed on, but it does not close or attack.

wlk... it is the TDW solution not mine:DL

the fact that some settings for AI are not related to the year it is an game bug... TDW fixed manny bugs in the AI but he can not solve this problem with having the same all things from game as in real life... but is an methode that you can simulate this...

In IRAI you have an file init.aix where you can set the dificulty for no merchant... so when you play campaigns in the first years of the WWII you can lower the settings for sonar for nonmerchants... and when you advance in years game you can change them back:up:

regards

It drove me crazy more than once till I read this from Magnum the other day:

Also, I noticed an old bug from stock making his way back ... the escort ships that will get glued to your sub. When a convoy or task force is passing by at long distance, one of the escorts is leaving the formation and get glued to your sub doing nothing else than circling forever at a constant distance. To shake them down u need to reload the game or drive them at shore.

Thinking to start with 50-70 in 39 and go up to 95-100 in mid 43 :dead:

I believe TDW had mentioned that below 80 the escorts are basically deaf, so 80 would be the minimum. You could try ,say, 80-90 for 39-42 and 85-95 for 43 and after.

At my begginings i played at 70 and they were not deaf at all:DL - i think he only suggest 80 as an good compromise

Indeed, in TDW words " Each sensor will have a difficulty rating of 0.0 - 1.0 with 0 being doesn't exist to 1 being 100% difficulty (current state of mod)."

Anyway, difficult in 100 might be to hard, 85-95 for 43 onwards as BilgeRat suggests sounds about right.

Thanks for the help. I had already edited the init.aix to sufficiently low levels but I still had the weird behaviour. At least I have an explanation for it now so once again, thanks :)

So the 3GB thing is the solution to the regular CTD's?

yes.

Some of the mods (especially the ones that modify graphics data) should revise their texture sizes, since I have seen some that added really really large textures that will only work OK on very powerful rigs.

So please, if you modify textures, try keeping the same resolution as the stock textures, or if you make larger ones, maybe make a version for lower spec computers.

Stock SH5 had problems fitting in the 512 video ram budget, which is what most video cards have right now. So any texture increase will certainly cause problems for some people.

To explain why the 3GB switch works: Since the game uses ~1.3 - 1.5 gb of memory, adding more than 512 video ram will exceed the 2GB virtual memory limit in Windows Vista/7.
But if you use extra large modded textures and play for a long time, pass through a lot of harbors etc, you might even exceed the 3GB limit. So CTDs are event possible with that switch, even though more seldom.

Had this the other day too, though as a first time player I didn't realise it was a bug (though I did suspect ;) ). 24 hrs submerged with him circling 1000 yards to port, everywhere I went he followed me and no fish left to take a cheeky strike... battery nearly dead. I eventually came up to surface around 2am, in thick fog and sunk the bugger with the deck gun! :D

Also, I didn't think the 3gb fix was needed for Win7, just Vista? Could be wrong though :salute:

Here is something to try for those of you having CTDs or using 32 bit OS:

Try this only if you have at least 2 GByte of RAM and at your own risk and using Vista/Win7 32 bit version.
First download the explorer from http://www.ntcore.com/exsuite.php
Next make a backup copy of SH5.exe. Then start "CFF Explorer" and open the orginal SH5.exe file.
Now go to NT Header/File Header and click File Header. There you will find a button labeld "click here". Click it and select the mark at "App can handle> 2gb adressest "
Save the modified EXE, overwrite the orginal one (You do have your backup of it in a safe location right?).
If you run Windows Vista 64 or Windows XP 64 or Win7 64 you're ready and didnt need to read on. The rest is only for Windows Vista 32/Win7 32 or maybe Windows XP.

I'm giving this a try but I'm not that smart, the SH5.exe file is basically just the file I use to start the game right?

When I did all the above I was surprised to see my 'can handle >2gb' box was already checked?? I still have the CTD's though

My PC should be up for the job I think;
Windows 7 64bit
Intel(R) Core (TM) i7-2600 CPU @3,40GHz
8,00 GB RAM
