very true, I wonder how many war criminals we would have seen on the allies side had they lost.

I suspect none, as the Axis only did the "war crimes" bit for propaganda, as they had no concept of it themselves - at least the leadership ("Final Solution" ring a bell?). If they had won, then there would have been no audience for them .....

I wonder if any kaleuns ignored the order and continued to give aid to survivors of their victims as the war went on?
Yes they did. I have read at uboat.net numerous reports of them giving food, water, directions, and first aid to survivors. Some even picked up swimmers and placed them in the lifeboats.

I'm not entirely sure about that. The Axis would have crucified any Russian they could get their hands on, and I know that they would look into war crimes for the Americans and British. The Axis were responsible for most of the war crimes in WWII, (Final Solution, Japanese execution and eating of American pilots, the Waffen-SS and the Malmedy massacre) the Allies weren't exactly exempt either. They had their fair share of war crimes too.

I would simply toss them a care package with some food, water, a rough hand drawn map leading to the nearest land, and wish them luck. I would radio a SOS for them but its way too risky.

I know what you mean,

Occasionally they would take 1-2 people captive, usually the captain of the ship, if they could find out who it is. Sometimes the survivors lied, if he survived, and said he went down with the ship. They would take their captive back to their base and turn them over for questioning followed by a trip to a POW camp.

Thats what still happened even after the Laconia order. Most of the commanders saw themselves as seamen (like the the other guy in the lifeboat) and as officers = sort of gallant gentleman.

For the torpedoed crews the war is over for now. And they need some help even if it´s only a small gesture of humanity in the middle of the atlantic.
On the other hand the commanders feared to be threatened the same way if they were captured somehow. So, be nice to your beaten enemy and so will he later.
