Salmonella Scare: Dr. Manny Answers

Your Questions,
With the egg recall reaching 380 million and still spreading from state to state, Americans are paying special attention to a microscopic invader that can wreak havoc on the human body: Salmonella.

It’s rare to see a recall of this magnitude in the United States, but when we do, consumers are reminded that food-borne illnesses are more common than we think and we have to pay special attention to the way our meals are handled and prepared.

I’ve been getting a lot of e-mails about this recall, so I decided to answer some of your questions.

Egg Recall Expands Again, May Be Nationwide Problem

"We are undertaking this additional recall to further protect the safety of consumers -- this voluntary measure is consistent with our commitment to egg safety, and it is our responsibility," the company said in its statement. The company initially recalled 228 million eggs.

Cases of Salmonella enteritidis were first reported in California, Colorado and Minnesota, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Food and Drug Administration and state health officials are now investigating salmonella outbreaks in Arizona, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, North Carolina, Nevada, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Texas.

Half a billion eggs have been recalled,

The Egg Safety Center has a complete list of recalled eggs, their expiration dates, and brands. Check the situation in your state. Here are safety tips.

(CNN) -- The number of eggs recalled in a nationwide salmonella scare has grown to more than half a billion.

Iowa egg producer Hillandale Farms of Iowa is voluntarily recalling some 170.4 million eggs distributed to stores and companies that service, or are located in, 14 states, a spokeswoman at the Egg Safety Center said on Friday.

More egg recalls could be ahead, FDA chief says,

Washington (CNN) -- The recall of more than half a billion eggs over the past two weeks is the "largest such egg recall in recent history" and the Food and Drug Administration "may need to continue with smaller subrecalls," FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg said on CNN's "American Morning" on Monday.

"We have a very complicated network of food distribution in this country," Hamburg said. "You start with a couple of farms in Iowa and you can get nationwide exposure."
